Wind musical instruments of ancient Greece and Rome

This thesis deals with ancient wind musical instruments. It focuses especially on three kinds of them - aulos, syrinx and military musical instruments, where salpinx, lituus and bucina belongs to. Each chapter of this thesis is dedicated to one of these wind instruments and discusses its origin and evolution. It also describes its using in ancient society - during sacral ceremonies, cultural events and in military or private life - this description is based on Greek, Roman end Etruscan iconography and also cites some of the references from ancient authors. Some of these instruments have developed during the ancient times into different shapes - these versions are described in this thesis on the background of iconography and bibliography. In the end of every single chapter there is a selection of the most important preserved samples of the musical instruments or their fragments. These samples, although they often are in poor condition, are clear evidence about the nature of ancient music. Greek and Roman musical instruments and their iconography

This thesis deals with ancient string and percussion instruments with additional focus on a hydraulic organ, an instrument that is difficult to categorize. The first part of the thesis is a follow-up to the bachelor thesis Wind Instruments of Ancient Greece and Rome, which is devoted to wind instruments, and deals with the classification, description and evolution of the instruments of the other two instrumental groups. This is illustrated on the background of literary, archaeological and iconographic sources, especially on the vase painting. Vase painting well demonstrates the shape, evolution and regional occurrence of these instruments. In the second part of this thesis the Attic and southern Italy vase paintings will be used to compare musical culture in both of these areas. In Attic music scenes the chronological evolution of depicted instruments is examined, while in southern Italian scenes we will concentrate on the differences of depicted instruments in the regions of Campania, Lucania, Sicily, Paestum and Apulia. Finally, the Attic musical instruments are compared with the instruments of southern Italy. The results of the analyses will be entered into graphs. Aristides Quintilianus and the Position his work on music holds among the Extant musicological Treatises

The extant ancient Greek treatises on music show very striking similarities regarding the explanation of music theory, although they span a time period of seven centuries. The aim of this thesis is to prove that these similarities were not caused by the missing development of music, but rather by the habit of ancient musicologists, who seem to have preferred the information contained in their sources, however old they were, to the description of real musical practice. In this respect Aristides Quintilianus, an author of the 3rd century AD, who wrote three books On music, was not different. This thesis includes an explanation of the development of music as it is depicted by contemporary non-musicological writers and notational diagrams, then presents the work of Aristides Quintilianus per se as well as in the context of the other ancient Greek musicological research. There is also a translation and a commentary on Aristides's first book, where the musical changes should be present. Finally, by a comparison of some parallel passages found in Aristides's first book and in the rest of the extant musicological treatises, Aristides's sources are exposed.
