POSPÍŠILOVÁ, Michaela
In my thesis I have dealt with the overweight and obesity and its reduction by using interventional program lasting 12 weeks. The whole research was a part of a three-year research project called {\clqq}Positive Effects of Self-Control and Self-Esteem Development on Overweight control through Intervention of Yoga training`` and this project was supported by a grant from the Czech Grant Agency GACR No 406/05/2431 aimed at gender, age and overweight reduction, where four hundred volunteers took part. In my researching project 30 elderly men suffering from overweight and obesity of the first degree participated. I have used the interventional active plan with 15 elderly people in the experimental group from February 2008 till May 2008. The program of my diploma work focused not only on measuring the degree of overweight and obesity by using the values of BMI, BIA, and by measuring the amount of subcutaneous fat with a caliper, but also on identifying the role of Self-concept and Self-esteem and consequently on the positive influence of that on their mental and social parameters during the process of decreasing the current body weight by using yoga training and keeping healthy lifestyle. On concluding of the interventional active plan the gained results were evaluated by the use of statistic methods, which are included in the publication from doc. Krejčí, Factors of self-control and self-esteem in overweight reduction. The results proved that through doing yoga training regularly, at least 30 minutes a day, along with keeping healthy diet and practicing relaxation techniques, we managed decrease overweight and obesity of the first degree, maintained the weight and improved the mental state.
Yoga and its significance in physiotherapy
SUDICKÝ, Milan
The bachelor{\crq}s thesis deals with the position and possibilities of wide-ranging use of yoga in modern physiotherapy. Yoga is an integral discipline looking upon humans as a whole. It does not divide them into separate parts, such as body, mind, psyche. In the past few decades yoga established itself in medical sciences and as an effective means of preventing civilization diseases, in rehabilitation and also as an auxiliary method of treating before all psychosomatic disorders. This way yoga has become an integral part of modern medicine. Yoga moves are very relaxed, slow, intentional, actively controlled and coordinated with breathing. As such these moves can be called reeducational, thus rectifying wrong movement patterns. By means of yoga one-sided overstrain of the locomotor apparatus can be set right very well, consequently establishing its well-proportioned load. Moreover, other existing treatment procedures can be supported effectively by establishing psychosomatic balance. The theoretical part of the thesis presents physiological principles of how yoga techniques work and describes the present-day position of yoga in physiotherapy. The thesis aims at showing the possibilities of wide-ranging application of yoga in physiotherapy, mainly for the benefit of influencing posture, breathing pattern, spine and joint mobility and improving the psychic condition of the patients. Qualitative research approach was applied using the following techniques: an interview, an examination by sight, body and posture assessment, the spine mobility examination, the examination of the passive movement range of the hip joint, the STAI questionnaire, and secondary analysis of the data. The study sample comprised three probands who took part in a six-month public yoga course during the research. Conducted examinations result in the fact that yoga exercises lead to regulation of the breathing pattern, to posture improvement and to balancing the psyche of the gymnasts. The thesis points out the fact that applying yoga techniques in physioteraphy to a larger extent can bring new possibilities of treating wrong body posture, solving vertebrogenic troubles and regulating breathing movements. The bachelor{\crq}s thesis can further on be used in clinical work of physiotherapists, but also for the needs of common yoga gymnasts.

My research has aimed to find out if an intensive week-long programme of yoga relaxation exercises can lead to improvement of fine motor skills, mobility, and the overall physical condition of mentally-disabled people of the 1st to 3rd level of disability. The research was conducted during the week-long school stay in nature. The participants were tested both the first and last day of their stay. The research sample was composed of six women and four men from the school for persons with special needs in Česke Budějovice. The methods utilised during the research were direct observation, evaluation and questioning to detect changes in indicators of physical condition and fine motor skills (including grasping reflexes of participants and familiarisation with new expressions). The results show positive change in these indicators. The therapy regimen resulted in the improvement in movement coordination, fine subtle skills of arms in everyday{\crq}s patient{\crq}s self-care activities; and the positive influence of yoga was also observed on psychological well-being of participants. The research project was beneficial for the participants and can serve as a model for further utilisation in the field applications of yoga exercises for people with mental disabilities.
