Regulation and Restriction of Entertaining Activities in the Environment of the Unity of the Brethren in the Pre-White Mountain Period

The effort of the Unity of the Brethren as a church group was to form a Christian community according to the biblical image of the Apostolic Church, in which the supreme authority is the Scripture, which also serves as the highest measure of proper conduct at all levels. The behaviour of all Brethren members was to be adapted to this accordingly. Although the social structure of the Brethren members changed over its existence, the principles of order and discipline, characterised by an emphasis on moral quality of life, obedience and God’s commandments applied to all its members, regardless of estate or social status. On the basis of\nnormative sources derived from fraternal leaders or issued in synodal resolutions, as well as narrative sources, especially sermons, it is possible to observe how the Brethren viewed the entertainment activities of its members, celebrations related to human life events, holidays, music and games. However, the strict rules necessarily led to their violation when applied in practical life. \n

The Doctrine of Antichrist and the Coming of Christ at the Beginning of the Unity of Brethren and its Roots in the Czech Reformation

This thesis provides a balanced overview of the active ideological currents in the late Middle Ages in the Czech lands concerning the doctrine of the Antichrist and the second coming of Christ. It not only deals with the religious situation during that period, but also emphasises the political, cultural and social circumstances. The text is divided into seven parts that discuss the apocalyptic sentiment and the eschatological visions prevalent in society in that period. Presented in it are the principal ideas of such prominent reformist scholars and thinkers as Jan Milíč of Kroměříž, Master Jan Hus, Jan Rokycan and Petr Chelčický. The text charts the teachings of these men, as they followed one another, concerning the issues of the concept of the Antichrist and the coming of Christ up to the period of the Hussite revolutionary movement and even later, during the early days of the Unity of Brethren. Special attention is also given to the spiritual circumstances involved in the founding of the Unity of Brethren; there the roots of its founding and its beginnings and its distinctive features are documented in the thesis. The Bequest of the Unity of the Brethren in the Lore and Practice of the Contemporary Protestant Churches in the Czech Republic

This theses researches the bequest of The Unity of the Brethren in the lore and practice of the contemporary protestant churches in the Czech Republic. The first part evaluates numerous sources to concretize the bequest of The Unity of Brethren to ten points, which represent the most specific characteristics of its lore. The second part focuses on comparison of the previously specified bequest of The Unity of Brethren with practice and lore of particular contemporary churches. Through analysis of church sources and structured interviews with the heads of contemporary churches the thesis shows which points of the bequest of The Unity of Brethren actually appear in the lore of the examined churches and to what extend these points influence the real life of the communities. The main objective of the thesis is to examine whether the rich Brethren tradition can be found in today's Czech churches. Moreover this work also asks to what extend these churches manage to keep the Brethren bequest alive in the modern social environment.

Reformation. Conditions of its rise and common features of reformations' growth.

The thesis traces the beginnings of these reformation movements: Waldensians, Hussites, Unity of Brethren, Lutherans and Anabaptists. It also deals with the situation in Roman Catholic church since all the movements spring out of it. Furthermore the author is answering the question whether these movements have a common denominator, that links them together. Orthography of Augusta's Summovník

This thesis presents graphemic analysis of the work "Summovník" by Jan Augusta, based on transliteration of selected stretches of texts. Identified as late as in 2012, the work has not been described yet. The work represents a print of the humanistic period, therefore the principal objective was to find out how two orthographic systems of the period - diagraphic and diacritic - interact. The analysis was divided into several chapters corresponding to the examined features that were statistically evaluated. The interpretation was especially based on two key 16th century grammars of Czech - the Grammar of Náměšť and the "Czech Grammar" by Jan Blahoslav. The transliterated text has been analysed in Microsoft Word 2007 by means of "Find and Replace" with "Use of substitute characters" instrument. The work of "Summovník" in this partially transliterated form can be used as a baseline for preparation of an edition of this work.
