Bosnia and Herzegovina: attitudes, interests and efforts of Croats and Serbs

The main goal of this thesis is to study the attitudes, interests and efforts of Croats and Serbs regarding Bosnia and Herzegovina. The research is specialized on the attitudes, interests and efforts of both nations in the issue of the Dayton Agreement and the Srebrenica events. The second focus of the work is the analysis of presenting and informing the Croatian and Serbian media about the mentioned issue in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Critical discourse analysis will be used as a research method. The research shows that the Croats seek a change in the Dayton Agreement and the Serbs deny the genocide committed in Srebrenica.

Kosovo - The Engagement of the International Community

The Balkans is an area where the diversity of culture, religion and ethnicity is prominent. This diversity has predisposed the Balkan region for troubled periods throughout the history. The Balkan peninsula has always been considered a very unstable territory. The bachelor's thesis deals with the Kosovo conflict in the 90's of the 20th century that escalated in 1998, the course of the conflict and the reasons of the international intervention. The conflict between two ethnic groups - Albanians and Serbs living in Kosovo - culminated in war that was attended by ethnic cleansing on both sides and ended by bombardment in Serbia by NATO forces lead by USA from March to June in 1999. The thesis introduces background history of the Balkan region and presents briefly the reasons for the hatred between the two ethnic groups, then examines the developments in Kosovo in the late twentieth century when the conflict escalated. The International Community tried unsuccessfully to resolve the conflict by diplomatic means. The thesis focuses on the engagement of the International Community, notably the UN and NATO, in the conflict in Kosovo and attempts to clarify the reasons and character of these interventions. Nationalist Discourse in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Civil War Images from 1992-1995 in Current Bosnian-Serb and Bosniak Media

(in English): The thesis deals with representations of civil war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the media that are influential among Bosniaks and Bosnian Serbs. The introduction summarizes the course of the war and briefly presents current social situation in the country. The nature of media field and of the media as such are described with use of existing analyses and research and with use of available information on media ownership. Continuing ethnic division of media is observed. The thesis uses critical discourse analysis both as a theoretic approach to discourse and as a methodological tool to its study. The civil war discourse in Bosniak and Bosnian Serb media is represented in the analysis by two daily newspapers on each side. The analysis showed mutually incompatible representations of causes and of the nature of the war, prevailing absence of their mutual dialogue and ignorance of war victims of the other side. Looking at more specific topics, a number of discourses are identified on both sides, among which there are some with potential to dialogue with alternative representations. The discourses are interpreted through Bosniak and Bosnian Serb nationalist ideologies.

British Reflection of the Kosovo Conflict and NATO Intervention: T.G. Ash and Noel Malcolm

The present bachelor thesis deals with reflection of the Kosovo conflict and NATO intervention in texts of British historians T. G. Ash and Noel Malcolm. The objective of the study is to compare the interpretation and opinions of the authors. This was achieved by using a comparative historiographical analysis based on interpretation of their texts in three areas - the causes of the conflict; the war in Kosovo and NATO intervention; the consequences of NATO intervention and the development of post-war Kosovo. It was found that the authors disagree on the major causes of the conflict in Kosovo. Both scholars interpet the war in Kosovo with pro-Albanian attitude, which is however stronger in Noel Malcolm's work. They both agree on the necessity of the NATO intervention, but their interpretation of the consequences of intervention is significantly different. However, they present the same opinion that Kosovo's claim to independence is legitimate.

The Relationship between Medieval Bohemians and Veleti Tribes in the Years 805 - 1035

This thesis deals with the analysis of the relationship of early medieval Bohemians and Slavic tribes of Polabian Slavs. It concentrates on the interaction of Bohemians with Vetelti tribes in the years 805 - 1035, the Serbian and Obodrite tribes are metioned only briefly. Alliance and probably a military pact between Bohemians and Veleti was active particulary in the encounters with the Caroligian and later Oton empire. Therefore, the thesis focuses on the campaign of the Empire to Bohemia and Polabian area and on the basis of the reaction of both subject analyses possible causes of mutual alliance. During the analysed period, the structure of the pact between Bohemians and Veleti was changing, mainly due to the development of international conditiond in middle Europe. Therefore, this thesis describes basic elemements of the development of the situation in middle Europe in analysed period of time. It also wants to introduce latest results of research of the foreign policy of the early medieval Bohemia, on the basis of contemporary sources to determine possible establishment, development and end of the pact between Bohemians and Veleti and to describe in detail this scarcely analysed problem.
