Self-harm and social networks - is there any relation?

The work deals with self harm as a maladaptive coping strategy. Emphasis is placed on adolescence as a risk period. Attention of this work is also paid to the social networks and an occurrence of self harm on them. The aim of the research was to find which the relation is between self harm and the activity on the social networks. Another aim was to discover the characteristics of these adolescents (social environment, reasons of self harm etc.), the ways of self harm and how they experience it. The research results showed that first reasons which led to start with self harm were troubled relationships, sexual abuse, rape, stress and craving for it. Actual reasons are individual, too. The most frequent reasons are stress, reasons connected with sexual abuse, troubled relationships and sadness. Respondents indicated that self harm served as a release. The research results showed that online communities are significant for self harmed adolescents. These communities give them the sense of belonging, support, possibility to find new friends and share their experiences.

Self harm in childhood and adolescence. Self harm is a phenomenon increasingly prevalent in society. It is present mainly among teenagers. There is just a little information concerning this issue in the Czech Republic. Self harm is defined as certain form f communication, a way of expressing one{\crq}s own feelings and emotions. It represents a behavior without any deliberate or aimed intention to die but with the outcome of non {--} lethally harming physical integrity. The theoretical part includes information about self harm, the relationship between self harm and suicidal behavior, its forms, causes, reasons, prevalence, and the course of the act and the therapy. The practical part consists of the case report of a woman who now reached maturity. The data were obtained from a qualitative research, document analysis method {--} technique content analysis, method questioning {--} technique interview. The objective was to determine causes and reasons for self harming behavior and how this act is perceived by the individual. This research paper reports that self harm is a non {--} specific reaction to certain stress situation and brings feelings of relief and internal release. The objectives of this paper were fulfilled. The paper offers a detailed analysis of the problem on a single case study including development stages with age impact. The conclusion of the research part reports that this bachelor{\crq}s paper may help with deeper understanding of this phenomenon found among teenagers.
