18M-IMMEDIATE Research Report: Prototype of Catalyst Powder Sufficient for Testing in MEAs Fabricated
Kaluža, Luděk ; Zdražil, Miroslav ; Gulková, Daniela ; Koštejn, Martin ; Vít, Zdeněk
High loadings of platinum (60 wt%) were precipitated (ICPF) or depo-sited (CNRS) onto research grade carbon black supports provided by TC. The supports and the resulting electrocatalysts were thoroughly characterised in order to select the best ones for optimisation and up-scaled manufacturing. For the preparation and characterisation vari-ous methodologies have been developed. Batches of the gram size were prepared of a handful of the most promising catalysts. This is sufficient for the preparation of test MEAs.

The aim of this work was to elucidate on the methods of Pt deposition on carbon black to achieve high loadings of Pt of about 60 wt.% in highly dispersed form. The carbon black supports were characterized by nitrogen physisorption. Platinum was deposited on the supports: from true solutions of H2PtCl6, Pt(C5H7O2)2, Pt(NH3)4(NO3)2, or Pt(NH3)2(NO2)2, and from fine dispersions of Pt(C5H7O2)2, PtO2, Pt(NH3)4(OH)2. Atomic adsorption spectroscopy, AAS, and scanning electron microscopy, SEM, were used for elemental analysis and determination of Pt content. The deposited Pt species were dried, calcined or reduced and were subjected to temperature programmed reduction, TPR. After degassing at increased temperature, the Pt dispersion was determined by hydrogen chemisorption at -60 C.

Activity and selectivity of Pt combustion catalysts prepared from w/o microemulsions
Rymeš, Jan ; Jirátová, Květa ; Ehret, G. ; Hilaire, L.
The study deals with catalytic combustion of volatile organic compounds (VOC) over supported Pt catalysts. Included in the study were: catalytic activity in combustion of VOC (toluene and ethanol) in VOC-air mixtures and physical-chemical properties of platinum catalysts prepared from reverse w/o microemulsions and by classical impregnation from water solutions of H2PtCl6.
