Lifestyle, decrease in physical activity, advance in new technologies, industrialization and globalization contribute to the increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity. Considering the number of factors participating in their formation might be beneficial for the nurses to use the Betty Neuman's conceptual model to evaluate the involved factors and the level of their influence. In accordance with this evaluation also set the interventions in the individual stages of prevention. The aim of this thesis was to describe the possibilities of utilization the Betty Neuman's conceptual model in prevention of overweight and obesity. In the investigative part the quantitative and qualitative research were used. The quantitative research was performed by means of a non-standardized questionnaire intended for the nurses from Vysočina region and Jihočeský region. The qualitative research was implemented via a semi-structured interview with the overweight or obese individuals and nurses from the same regions. Relating to the people with overweight and obesity, no significant differences in stressors were found after the quantitative data analysis. However, the results reveal a considerable dissatisfaction with the overall appearance and health condition. They also reveal the perception of the overweight and obesity impact at work. The respondents show an interest in weight reduction, some of them try repeatedly. Equally, the qualitative data analysis implies that the overweight and obese patients percept themselves with less satisfaction. The most frequent problems are higher weight, troubles with breathing and pain in legs while walking. With regard to general nurses, it was found out that they approach the overweight and obese patients the same way as the rest of the patients. They would recommend regular and healthy diet and exercise. The gathered results reveal the necessity of communication with the individuals who suffer from overweight and obesity. For the lifestyle transformation, sufficient education supported by motivation is crucial.
