Free will in José Saramago's novels

This work deals with the motive of free will in novels of Portuguese author from 20th century José Saramago, specifically in novels The Elephant's journey, Cain, and Baltasar and Blimunda. The objective of this paper is to find and analyze different forms of free will in texts and its relation with social problems. The main philosophical basis for this paper is the book Freedom evolves from American deterministic philosopher Daniel C. Dennett, which deals with the relation between free will, society and responsibility. This paper also concerns about the postmodern characters of Saramago's work, especially about the specific attitude to history. The main clue was the study from Lubomír Doležel History in the time of postmodernism.
