Emperor Charles IV. and the Conquest of Brandenburg 1371 - 1373

The aim of this thesis is to describe in detail the process of acquisition of the Margraviate of Brandenburg by Holy Roman Emperor and king of Bohemia Charles IV. It uses charters, chronicles, annals and other contemporary sources to map especially the military actions of the years 1371 - 1373, which eventually led to the conquest of Brandenburg. Furthermore, the thesis concentrates on the history of Charles IV's endeavour to seize this land in relation to his political and territorial ambitions. It is also concerned with Emperor's motivations and his diplomatic activities regarding Margraviate of Brandenburg and its seizure. In a special chapter it describes the structure of the army that Charles IV had at his disposal during the two campaigns to Brandenburg. The overall aspiration of this thesis is to be beneficial to the study of the uses of military might by Charles IV, as well as to the Czech military history of the second half of 14. century.
