Institutional English language education in Korea

This bachelor's thesis deals with the teaching of English language in Korea at the institutional level. The first part describes the arrival of the English language on the Korean peninsula from the end of the 19th century until 1945. While describing this period the thesis focuses on the emergence of the first state and private institutions, where the English language was taught and tries to briefly introduce the type of used teaching methods in this period. The second part records the period from 1945 to the present in Republic of Korea. The thesis tries to note the historical-political influences, which have been reflected in the objectives of the curriculum with a focus on English teaching, and introduces state programs, including basic teaching methods. The last part of this thesis is dedicated to the current situation with a focus on the "English fever" phenomenon and related social phenomena, the problem of early education home and abroad, the construction of English villages, the evaluation of teaching and the problem of incompetence of teachers, the growing business in the private sector and the early teaching in Korea.
