Foreign Policy of Ivan Mazepa in Mirror of East European and Western Historiography

(english) This thesis evaluates the foreign policy of Ivan Stepanovych Mazepa, the Cossack Hetman of the second half of the 17th century and early 18th century. It maps the beginning of his political career, his relationship with the Russian Tsar Peter I. and above all the Great Northern War period (1700-1721) which is connected to his defection to the side of Russia's opponent, Swedish King Karl XII. The basis of thesis is an analysis and a comparison of opinions of Ukrainian, Russian and Western modern historians (F. M. Umanets, B. D. Krupnytsky, O. P. Ohloblyn, S. O. Pavlenko, D. N. Bantysch-Kamensky, N. I. Kostomarov, T. G. Tairova-Jakovleva, A. G. Shkvarov, C. A. Manning, R. K. Massie, O. Subtelny, P. Englund) on the career and especially the role of Mazepa in the Russo-Swedish conflict.
