Censorship in the Czech Translations of Karl May's Novel Winnetou

4 Abstract The thesis examines the Czech translations of the novel Winnetou by German author Karl May, which were published in the beginning of the 20th century, in the era of Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. The aim of the empirical research is to prove whether the translations were influenced and manipulated by the governing ideology or not. The paper also covers relevant works of the translation theorists Anton Popovič, Itamar Even- Zohar and André Lefevere. Due to limited extent of this paper the empirical re- search focuses only on selected parts from four Czech translations of the novel Winnetou, which are related to religious, philosophical and national topics. The analysis covers not only the linguistic aspect of the translations, but also takes into consideration the political situation of the relevant era. The Factory of Dreams - Books and Films by Karl May in Bohemia during the 20. Century

The diploma thesis deals with the work of German writer Karel May, and so with film adaptations of these books in Czech context. The work reflects Karel May´s personage through the 20th century. The first part pays attention to May´s Czech editions from the first ones in the publishing house Jos. R. Vilímek, to the half of the century when the ?mayovky? came out in the publishing house Toužimský&Moravec. The second part presents selected receptions of May´s work by publicly active people. The next part mentions the origion of film adaptations in the sixties, the last part deals with their presentation to Czech cinemas from the sixties to the eighties of the last century.

Reception of the work of Karl May in Bohemia during the twentieth century

This bachelor thesis deals with the German writer Karl May. This year, 170 years have passed since his birth and 100 years have passed since his death. The thesis gives out a comprehensive May´s biography which aims at the first half of writer's life. The second part of the thesis deals with the relationship of Karl May to the Czech environment, both to Bohemia, where Karl May spent several weeks of his life on various visits, and to the Czechs themselves, especially to his Czech publisher Josef Richard Vilímek junior. In the third and final part of the thesis several Czech admirers of Karl May reveals why the German writer became their lifelong hobby.
