MILITANT POVERTY OF MEDIOCRITY and/or INTERSTICIAL SPACE
Fojtík, Matej ; Jakšík, Petr (referee) ; Rozwalka, Szymon (advisor)
The thesis “MILITANT POVERTY OF MODIOCRITY AND/OR INTERSTITIAL SPACE” is a continuation of the overall theme Vector of poverty. The starting point for me were the ideas of the German philosopher of Korean origin Byung-Chul Han, presented in his book „Burnt-out Society”. In an attempt to find a space in the city that had not yet been affected by homogenizing tendencies, I set out to the area of Brno’s Cejl and Trnitá. This area has been shaped by the textile industry over the last centuries and is characterised by cultural and social diversity. The Jewish population, which was one of the main groups of local inhabitants until the Second World War, was served here for their spiritual needs by the Great Synagogue. It was burnt down on the day the Protectorate was declared and the land where it stood has been filled with emptiness for 85 years. This becomes the starting point for my architectural design. In the space I am designing I am trying to deal with the weight of this place in the context of the ideas of Zygmund Bauman, who writes about the Holocaust as an extreme outgrowth of modernist way of thinking. The site becomes an interstitial space, a space of otherness that also reflects my thoughts on the state of contemporary architecture.
Sheeting of Foundation Pit
Vodáček, Ondřej ; Chalmovský, Juraj (referee) ; Glisníková, Věra (advisor)
First part of the thesis talks about pit sheeting in general, including shafts and trenches as well as pits, however pits are the very main topic and therefore described in details. This part also discusses earth pressure and groundwater issues as applied loads, yet only marginally. Second part demonstrates a particular sheeting structure and its calculation. All presumptions are established here, including double-anchored sheet pile wall geometry, spoken earth pressure loads and groundwater loads plus heavy equipment load during a construction. The calculating process is shown using computer softwares (Plaxis 2D, GEO5) and also in a non-software way using just pen and paper. At the very end of thesis an ultimate limit state (ULS) of sheet piles is assessed, software and non-software results are compared to each other and discussed.
Anxiety and estrangement in Juan Carlos Onetti's works
Krupková, Tereza ; Housková, Anna (advisor) ; Vydrová, Hedvika (referee)
Anxiety and estrangement in Juan Carlos Onetti's works Key words: Onetti, The Well, novel, Eladio Linacero, estrangement, anxiety, loneliness, dreams, Tizón This work focuses on the literary conception of characters in Onetti's works. Specifically, it converges on anxiety, loneliness and estrangement, which are the central components of the author's prose. Onetti's first-fruit, The Well, serves as a starting point. This novel revealed new possible ways of the novel-writing and influenced many other authors. It carries the key issues of Onetti's future work. The novel is sketchy; the images often do not follow each other and they are directed by hidden associations. There appears a new character: urban anti-hero, who escapes from the hostile reality to the fantasy life. The present work features the protagonist of The Well with other Onetti's characters. The part dedicated to the style focuses on the relation between form and content. Onetti's books are about misunderstanding which is reflected in the structure and language. In the final chapter of this work is confronted The Well with The Beauty of the World by Héctor Tizón. Different and in some components similar processes allow to recognize and define Onetti's style and uniqueness better.
