Seal Hunting in the Canadian Arctic:Conflicting Perspectives on EU Regulation 1007/2009
Jírová, Anna ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (advisor) ; Kýrová, Lucie (referee)
On September 16, 2009 the European parliament adopted a Regulation (EC) 1007/2009 prohibiting the seal products from being imported and placed on the European Union market. Adoption of a Seal trade ban was a result of an effective anti-sealing lobby and increasing public concern over the perceivably cruel seal hunting methods that emerged in reaction to growing popularity of seal fur in early 2000s. Even though the Seal ban includes an exception for Inuit who hunt seals traditionally for subsistence and depend on monetary income to maintain their traditions, it proved to be highly ineffective as the demand for all seal products declined dramatically, threatening Inuit way of life in the process. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the key actors involved in the conflict, specifically the Inuit, the European Union, animal welfare NGOs and the Canadian government and to contextualize and analyze the specific narratives of the seal hunting discourse and their implications. By looking at the motivation and justification of the EU Seal ban as well as the implications of the different perspectives on the issue, this research will try to test the hypothesis that the seal hunting discourse is based on a colonial mindset and that decolonization of the mind is yet to be achieved by Western society.
The Role of Greenland and Nunavut in International Relations in 1979-2009
Zettlitzerová, Radka ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (advisor) ; Kozák, Kryštof (referee)
Greenland and Nunavut are territories with a limited measure of autonomy. Greenland obtained it's autonomy when the Greenland Home Rule Act came into effect. Nunavut instead, obtained it's autonomy from the moment it was created in 1999, via the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement and the Nunavut Act.. Both Greenland and Nunavut have no authority to interfere with international affairs, but they do have options to get involved via different Inuit organizations (the majority of the population both Greenland and Nunavut are Inuits). This bachelor thesis, Role of Greenland and Nunavut in international relations in 1979 - 2009, aims to find an answer to the possibility of Greenland and Nunavut having an active part in international affairs (based on the documents mentioned above), if they can be considered of subjects of the international law and if some examples of their international involvement even can be mentioned. Even though according to their constitutional acts, niether Greenland nor Nunavut are allowed to act independently in matters of international affairs, the author of this thesis defends the hypothesis that in fact they can, participate in international discussions and even, on a limited scale, decide their own foreign policy. The first part of this thesis introduces a basic geographical,...

Inuit and the Northern Strategy of Canada
Jírová, Anna ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (advisor) ; Raková, Svatava (referee)
This bachelor thesis "Inuit and Canada's Northern Strategy" deals with the relationship between the Canadian Federal Government and the Inuit, especially in the period of 2006- 2015, when the conservative Stephen Harper held the post of Canadian Prime Minister. In 2007 the document Canada's Northern Strategy was published, introducing a plan of active arctic development, primarily based on increased Canadian military presence and economic activities. The importance of the Inuit, real inhabitants of the Arctic, was confirmed in this document by mentioning the Inuit's historical presence in the Arctic as a key argument of Canada's Arctic claims. Despite this fact, a real change of policy, that could help solve the current social crisis of the Inuit community, did not come and the Inuit are still rarely consulted where Canadian arctic initiatives are concerned. The aim of this thesis is, with the help of two main documents: Canada's Northern Strategy and the Inuit Action Plan, to analyse the priorities and demands of the Inuit and the Canadian government, in order to find out if a common goal exists and what the reason is behind the misunderstanding and failed communication between these two parties, which prevents the Inuit social crisis from being solved and the region from true prosperity. The...
