The Representation of Richard Nixon in Works of Hunter S. Thompson and Norman Mailer/Zobrazení Richarda Nixona v díle Huntera S. Thompsona a Normana Mailera
REMEŠ, Jakub
The thesis aims to uncover a relationship between less-known books from Norman Mailer and Hunter S. Thompson, who belonged to a group of New Journalism, with the American history of the 1960s and 1970s. In first part of the thesis, both writers are introduced and the historical background is clarified. The second part illustrates the atmosphere of the 1972 presidential election in the USA and the personality of Richard M. Nixon which is based on the perception of Mailer and Thompson and supplemented with the information from books about American history. In the end, the student compares what the chosen works have in common and what differs. The concluding part summarizes how the books reflect the historical events and why it is still worthwhile reading them.
An Outlaw Journalist's Journey through an Era Decadent and Depraved: Hunter S. Thompson in the context of America of the 1960s and early 1970s.
Stárek, Jiří ; Robbins, David Lee (advisor) ; Ulmanová, Hana (referee)
The thesis aims to explore the artistic personality of Hunter S. Thompson, one of the most distinctive cultural figures of post-war America, and his genesis as an author, journalist, and a counterculture idol of the 1960s. The era is now widely regarded as a turning point in contemporary American history as its deep-rooted values and norms were, over the course of a decade, gradually transformed by the young generation of social and political activists toward allegedly a more tolerant and liberal kind of community. Crucial in such an endeavor was the role of the countercultural movement that produced some of the most capable intellectual minds of the time, including Thompson. The paper thus analyzes the role and nature of the alternative culture in America as perceived by one of its most observant participants. Also, the thesis focuses on the author's role in establishing a new genre called New Journalism which can be linked with the era's countercultural efforts as well. In general, Thompson, in his texts, examines various phenomena surrounding the counterculture and provides us with a distinctive portrayal of the era's zeitgeist. However, unlike some of his contemporaries, he also remembers to examine numerous flaws and fallacies existing within contemporary American society, the American Dream...

Gonzo journalism-his origin, progress and influence on journalism
Nouzová, Pavlína ; Beneš, Piere (advisor) ; Vedral, Jan (referee)
This thesis deals with Gonzo journalism in all the world and especially in Czech republic. First part is about origin of Gonzo journalism and its "founder" Hunter S. Thompson. I use his personality to show a form of old Gonzo and I portray typical features of this style or its authors with using Thompson's articles. I choose as a main article The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved, which is considered as a first Gonzo article. But not only history is important, so the thesis is also about modern Gonzo in foreign countries. As in the first part, I chose one typical representative of this style - Matt Taibbi. He contributes to Rolling Stone magazine (like Thompson did, too) and often disgusts many of his readers. In his case, I don't focus on particular articles, but on two magazines - The eXile and New York Press. I use these two distinctive personalities (Thompson and Taibbi) to compare old Gonzo with a modern form and I explain differences and causes of them. Next very short part of my thesis is about Gonzo in other branches and I show the popularity of Gonzo besides journalism. Then I focus on Gonzo journalism in Czech republic. I chose as main journalists Michal Nanoru, Honza Vedral and Petr Wagner and as main magazines Živel, Filter and Full Moon. I compare them and show their strengths...
