Pledge fulfillment in NATO: free-riding of "new members"

The diploma thesis focuses on the causes of the phenomenon of free-riding and the approach to fulfilling commitments towards NATO and burden-sharing in general in the cases of "new" NATO members. The timeframe of 2015-2019 and the qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) method combined with three case studies (Lithuania, Hungary, Romania) were chosen for the research. The QCA focused on four independent variables - economic situation, perceived level of threat, strategic culture (Atlantism/Europeanism) and ideological orientation of the government (left/right). The perceived level of threat proved to be a necessary and potentially sufficient variable. However, among the investigated cases, there was none empirically confirming the sufficiency. The simplest combination of variables that led to fulfilling the commitments and was supported by an existing case was a combination of an intensely perceived level of threat and the strategic culture characteristic of Atlanticism. Because already existing research on free-riding indicates that it is a multi-causal phenomenon, the author is inclined to the opinion that the mentioned combination of variables is the simplest sufficient combination. Difficulties of the EU - Cohesion Policy Implementation Systém in the Czech Republic in the Programming period 2007-2013

The thesis Difficulties of the EU - Cohesion Policy Implementation System in the Czech Republic in the Programming period 2007-2013 deals with application of the theories of the European integration on two case studies. In the first part of the thesis the general history of the EU - structural policy is described. The second part is dedicated to the history of the structural policy in the Czech Republic. The third part is concerned with the theoretical definition of the topic and leads to a definition of the hypothesis and the research method. The main theoretical approach for the case studies is the multi-level governance theory, which describes multi-level sharing of authority among different types of actors. None of those actors has a power to define final version of the given policy. The case studies, which in detail examine the development and the efficiency of the implementation system of structural policy in Czech Republic, prove that this environment can cause the coordination dilemma connected with overuse of the free-riding tactics and high transaction costs. The combination of those elements leads to highly rigid system of implementation.

Preventing the optimal Outcome - Free-Riding at Charles University

Group work is pervading modern society's life with potentially huge advantages but also the peril of motivational losses. This master thesis focuses on the latter ones, namely on free-riding and social loafing, in the educational context. I conducted a field research at the Institute of Economic Studies at Charles University in Prague. The results are set into context with existing studies from the US, scrutinizing the generalizability of these studies. Students of this sample consider teamwork as relatively neutral, appreciate the possibility to learn from each other the strongest and consider free-riding as the biggest disadvantage. Free-riders are described as poorly prepared, having trouble to complete work at home and delivering poor quality work. As remedy, students prefer to be able to pick a team on their own. This thesis can partially confirm prior research but also contradicts some anterior findings since free-riders in this thesis are not described as behaving distractively and students do not primarily want instructors to grade them on their individual performance.
