Name Signs for Chosen Czech Politicians in the Czech Sign Language
Nováková, Eva ; Vaňková, Irena (advisor) ; Macurová, Alena (referee)
This bachelor's thesis focuses on the name signs of chosen Czech politicians in the Czech sign language. The main objective is to describe and classify those signs and point out tendencies for their creation, for example, those related to political correctness. Name signs used among the Deaf are later compared to those used in the news program in Czech sign language (Zprávy v českém znakovém jazyce). The first part of the thesis covers proper nouns in the Czech language, heavily focusing on anthroponyms and their types which the author considers relevant for the thesis. The next chapter characterizes name signs and their categorization, which is based on the diploma thesis by Radka Faltínová (2005). The research part of the thesis describes and categorizes all the variations of the name signs collected from respondents and the news program in Czech sign language (Zprávy v českém znakovém jazyce). The author compares these two groups of name signs and comments on potential links between the frequency in which people watch the TV news in Czech sign language (Zprávy v českém znakovém jazyce) and used variants of the name signs. The thesis also provides an insight into the tendencies while creating a new name sign for public figures. Keywords Czech sign language, name signs, proper names, Czech politicians
