Sýkorová, Barbora ; Válová, Karolina (advisor) ; Grauová, Šárka (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the Amazon as an intersection in Milton Hatoum's books . The objective of the thesis is to find in his novel Two brothers and in the novella Orphans of Eldorado specific features of this region and name them as the signs of meeting, impacting and blending. The thesis is based on the history of the Amazon region, on geography and on the literature dealing with this topic. It focuses on the analysis of the novel and the novella. The common theme of both books is primarily the environment - the city of Manaus. The analysis finds in the novel the intersections in the field of ethnicities, cultures and regions. There are many motives in the novella in common with the novel, but the analysis finds other intersections in the economic and social field as well as in the presence of the reality and myths. Finding the intersections of the Amazon in the books of Milton Hatoum can help to understand the complexity of the Amazon. It can also contribute to the appreciation of the literary work of this contemporary Brazilian writer. Key words Brazil, Amazon, Manaus, Milton Hatoum, Two Brothers, Orphans of Eldorado, intersection, culture, religion, Christian, Muslim, ethnicity, myth, economy, American Indian, European, Lebanese
