Mathesso: Board game as a diagnostic tool

This bachelor thesis explores the potential of using Mathesso, a board game, in the assessment of cognitive functions. The theoretical part includes an introduction to psychological testing, a summary of the limitations of classical testing, and an overview of emerging alternative methods. It also discusses the use of games in psychology and psychological assessment, describes previous research on board games in this context, and provides an overview of the directions of research on gamification in psychodiagnostics. The empirical section includes a description of the research in which 23 respondents were presented with a modified version of the game in digital form, along with three cognitive tests measuring intelligence, memory, and executive functions. The obtained data were analyzed using correlations. The results show a significant correlation with a large effect size for the intelligence test, but do not suggest the ability of this method to compete with the Trail Making Test used as a common measure of executive functions. For the measurement of memory, the procedure chosen for explaining the game instructions proved to be completely inappropriate, so the ability to measure this cognitive function needs to be retested.
