Cajkář, Jakub ; Sehnálková, Jana (advisor) ; Kozák, Kryštof Přemysl (referee)
This master's thesis examines the rhetorical strategy of the Republican Party in the presidential campaigns in the second half of the 20th century while its main part analyzes George H. W. Bush's campaign in 1988. This research aims to ascertain whether Bush's campaign carried racist features and whether the Republican candidate exploited the racial prejudice of white voters toward African Americans. Firstly, the thesis briefly outlines the history of racial discrimination in the United States and explores the presidential campaigns of Republican candidates who perfected the strategy of dog whistle politics when they enticed white constituents while sacrificing African-American votes by using implicit racial allusions that connected Blacks with words of negative connotations like "crime", "drugs", "law and order", or "welfare queens". Afterward, the thesis focuses on the strategy of Bush's presidential campaign in 1988. It analyzes some of the negative television commercials which strived to weaken the Democratic nominee Michael Dukakis and make him appear soft on crime. Predominantly the "Willie Horton" ad, which abused the story of an African-American man convicted of murder, helped to create this narrative. The Trump Metaphors: Comedy News Portrayal of Donald Trump During the 2016 US Presidential Election
Králová, Petra ; Císař, Ondřej (advisor) ; Blokker, Paulus Albertus (referee)
This master's thesis deals with the implications of metaphorical language, which comedy news programs used to portray Donald Trump as a candidate during the 2016 US presidential election. First, the author outlines the most important moments of Donald Trump's presidential campaign, then introduces the comedy news genre as well as three comedy news programs - The Daily Show, Last Week Tonight and Real Time - which are included in the analytical part of the thesis. The thesis continues with the theoretical and methodological chapters, in which conceptual metaphor analysis based on the works of Lakoff, Johnson and Yanow is presented. The metaphor analysis itself, performed on 73 comedy news episodes, reveals that mostly the same metaphors were used across all three programs and they overwhelmingly portray Donald Trump as non-human. As the election kept approaching, Donald Trump was increasingly portrayed as "a natural disaster," "the apocalypse" or "the Devil." The author suggests that the overall tacit objective of the metaphors used in the three comedy news programs was to dehumanize Donald Trump. Finally, the limitations of the analysis are discussed and suggestions for further research on the implications of metaphorical language are made.

Čermáková, Jana ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (advisor) ; Osvaldová, Barbora (referee)
This Bachelor thesis, entitled, "Media image of Barack Obama's presidential campaign in the dailies Mlada Fronta and Hospodarske noviny", examines the presentation of an Afroamerican politician during the primary and general American Presidential election period. It covers the peak primary election campaign and the finish of that campaign, and the start of the general election in 2008. The articles and reports published in the selected period and pursued this theme at length, were subsequently processed by the method of qualitative analysis. The goal is to show Barack Obama's exact media image as presented by both dailies, and this thesis also focuses on whether the coverage of the democratic candidate was aimed primarily at presenting him as an Afroamerican. An important resource for research was media theory that deals with the way the media shows ethnic and national minorities. The object was therefore to study the stereotypical view of the group and when describing Barack Obama based on racial stereotypes. In conclusion is outlined the resulting media image of the Democratic candidate, and is specifically pointed out the errors made by the media in describing Barack Obama. Keywords Barack Obama, american presidential election, election campaign, media, black, Afroamerican, stereotype
