Behaviorální projevy žiraf v zoologických zahradách
Rožnovský, Petr
The aim of the diploma thesis was to evaluate the daily activities of giraffes kept in zoos during individual seasons, to determine differences in the life manifestations of giraffes kept in two zoos, differentiation in the behaviour of giraffe herds depending on the presence of a male, the proportion of giraffes staying indoors and in outdoor enclosures and rumination. 12 activities were evaluated during the seven-hour observation. During the years 2020 to 2022, 30 ethological monitoring were carried out, spread over individual seasons. The re-sults of the ethological study show that giraffes devoted the most time (23%) to food intake. Chewing, nibbling, observing the surroundings, licking objects and walking were also fre-quent activities. Giraffes kept in the Zoo Zlín nibbled, licked objects, and chewed more often. In the Zoo Dvůr Králové, there was more observation of the surroundings, feeding and browsing. Contact with other individuals of the herd was also a frequent activity. The pres-ence of a male influenced the behaviour preferences of the giraffes. It was observed that most often giraffes chew a bite 45-49 times, while the variance of the range of the number of chews varied from 23 to 79.
Monitoring of the Giraffa Herd (Giraffa camelopardalis) kept in a Prague ZOO
Stibůrková, Miroslava ; Řezníček, Jan (advisor) ; Vančatová, Marina (referee)
My master's thesis deals with monitoring of giraffes group (mainly three members - male Johan, cow Berta and young cow Laura) in Prague zoological garden in the period from summer 2012 till spring 2013. Behavior of three chosen individuals is presented in the form of graphs and charts for better clarity. Overview of all Giraffidae Family, its description and living area, is included in the thesis. Zoological gardens breeding giraffes and conditions of their breed are included in this project.

Growth of ungulates

The bachelor thesis deals with the growth of giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis). From the data obtained from scientific publications, I examined whether there are differences in size between wild and captive giraffes. I also evaluated the size differences between subspecies and I examined whether the data in encyclopedias correspond to the information published in scientific journals. For lack of data about the height I assessed only weight. I put data from scientific publications into spreadsheet and I further analyzed this obtained data. Due to sexual dimorphism, the results were analyzed separately for males and females. For both sexes, individuals living in the wild are significantly heavier than individuals living in captive. Smaller body weight of captive individuals may be due to unnatural diet and climate. So it is with birth weight of calves, in the wild, calves are born heavier. In case of weight differences among subspecies, there are significant differences among females. The results may be connected with clinal changes known from other mammals or they may be influenced by non-balanced number of individual data within the subspecies. We can say that the information in encyclopedias do not correspond with scientific articles, at least in terms of weight. In encyclopedias there are probably the record values, not the average one.
