Contribution to the Study of the Mesolithic Settlement in Bohemia

ČULÁKOVÁ, KATARÍNA. Contribution to the Study of the Mesolithic Settlement in Bohemia. Prague: Faculty of Arts, Charles University, 2015, 742 p. (including appendices and plates), PhD. thesis. This thesis wants to present lithic collections. Part of them come from an Eastern Bohemian region and part of them from the Bohemian Forest region. Firstly there is a description of how the collections were obtained. Most of the material comes from a surface survey, a smaller part comes from test pitting. A majority of the collections wasn't previously published and was processed for the purpose of this thesis, part of the information was obtained from published articles. This thesis presents a collection of 25 000 lithic pieces from Eastern Bohemia and 3 500 lithic pieces from the Bohemian Forest. At first there are the most numerous sites described according to their position in the landscape and composition of the lithic collection. Then there is a whole collection characterised according to the used raw material, typology and used technology. This information is incorporated into the wider frame of Central European mesolithics. Late Palaeolithic in Bohemia and Moravia

This work gives an overview of up to date knowledge of the Final Pleistocene in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia, within the period known in archaeology as Late Palaeolithic. Apart from the review of results of previous research, six Late Palaeolithic chipped stone assemblages have been analyzed on techno-typological level. These assemblages have been put in context with contemporaneous sites in given region to create a map of Late Palaeolithic settlement. Quantification of most raw materials used in different sites made it possible to distinguish three to five raw material provinces, i.e. areas supplied with a concrete raw material type. These areas are probably identical with hunting territories of Late Palaeolithic hunters of Bohemian, Moravian and Silesian territory. Remarks on raw material distribution in western LbK Culture region during the Neolithic

This diploma thesis deals with the distribution of lithic raw materials in the Neolithic, whereas the main interest was focused on the area of Germany. The dispersion of chipped and polished stone artefacts in time and space was studied on the basis of available literature. The first part of this work presents existing knowledge about spreading specific types of lithic raw materials. The second part introduces sites from different federal states with finds of chipped and polished stone industry from which was it possible to determine the composition of lithic raw materials collections. The database is part of this work and includes catalogue of sites.
