Dignity of dying elderly from the perspective of accompanying relatives

The work focuses on the issue of dignity of the dying elderly. The theoretical part of the thesis discusses the main themes of the thesis, such as old age and dying with regard to dignity, as well as the accompaniment of the dying elderly and the impact of hospitalization on the elderly and their families. The research, i.e. the empirical part of the thesis, focuses on the area of accompaniment. The research was conducted in the form of interviews and the analysis was done using the grounded theory method. According to the results of the research, the situation in hospital facilities is alarming and the respect for the dignity of dying elderly has reserves according to the attendants. The attitude of health professionals is perceived as problematic both in relation to dying patients and in relation to the accompanying relatives of the dying. According to the respondents, the leading problems are undignified attitude, inadequate communication and lack of information and inability to accompany and visit the dying. These are therefore simple and basic aspects of quality care.
