Syntactic Aspects of the Existential Construction in Danish with regard to the English and Czech Translation

The chosen topic of this thesis is Danish existential sentences introduced by the pronoun "der," specifically with regard to their syntactic characteristics. The thesis firstly describes its approach and methodology used for the creation of its practical part. Secondly, the thesis delves into the general rules for the existential sentences, discusses the overlap between "der" and "det" existential constructions, briefly compares other existing works on the main topic, and thereafter arrives to its practical part. The practical part is an analysis of 120 sentences in total, more precisely, 60 sentences chosen from contemporary literature and 60 sentences based on corpus findings extracted from the European Parliament's official documents. The analysis pays special attention to the position of the pronoun "der", the notional subject and its realisations, verbs used in this type of constructions, and the position of the adverbials in these constructions. With this endeavour, the thesis hopes to contribute to the academic discourse, help further deepen the specification of the Danish existential sentences, and help potential other future comparative works, be it between Scandinavian languages or stylistically different types of texts.
