Amazon as a intersection in novels of Milton Hatoum

The bachelor thesis deals with the Amazon as an intersection in Milton Hatoum's books . The objective of the thesis is to find in his novel Two brothers and in the novella Orphans of Eldorado specific features of this region and name them as the signs of meeting, impacting and blending. The thesis is based on the history of the Amazon region, on geography and on the literature dealing with this topic. It focuses on the analysis of the novel and the novella. The common theme of both books is primarily the environment - the city of Manaus. The analysis finds in the novel the intersections in the field of ethnicities, cultures and regions. There are many motives in the novella in common with the novel, but the analysis finds other intersections in the economic and social field as well as in the presence of the reality and myths. Finding the intersections of the Amazon in the books of Milton Hatoum can help to understand the complexity of the Amazon. It can also contribute to the appreciation of the literary work of this contemporary Brazilian writer. Cruz e Sousa: the "walled-in" Poet of Brazilian Symbolism

This master's thesis deals with the analyse the poem in prose "Walled-in" by Brazilian black symbolist poet João da Cruz e Sousa. At the beginning it outlines the author's life and work. An insight into the starting points of Symbolism follows, accompanied by a detailed characterization of the essential features of its poetics as represented in the works by Cruz e Sousa. The analysis itself begins with the definition of the poem genre in prose and a brief outline of the content of the "Walled-in", which is a synthesis of the poet's artistic and life options resulting from being a black man. On this basis, I have determined the fundamental themes (Night, Art, Pain and Blackness), in which the poet's exclusion as an artist and as a negro. The initial intimate confession turns into a fiery speech that fights back narrow- minded artistic production of the period and the Negro discrimination.

The bachelor thesis deals with the specific features of the Amazon that are shown in the books of Milton Hatoum - Two brothers and Orphans of Eldorado. Geographically, historically, culturally, politically and economically presents the Brazilian city of Manaus. In the connection to this city and to the Amazon itself, it introduces not just the author but also the local life with its specific features. The analysis of the novel Two Brothers focuses on Manaus literally rendered as a city full of intersections - ethnic, cultural and religious. The analysis of the novel Orphans of Eldorado finds the same features in both novels. However, he finds the center of gravity in portraying social problems and in the presentation of Manaus as a real city full of myths. In conclusion, the facts about the Amazon and the searched literature passages show Hatoum's specific view of this unique and constantly metamorphic area. The aim of the M.A. thesis The Seeking according to G. H. is to introduce the prose The Passion According to G. H. by Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector (1920-1977) and examine this literary work in relation to biblical motives which appear in the novel. First, the author presents Lispectorʼs life and work and mentions her contribution to the Brazilian literary canon. Then he thoroughly analyses and interprets the prose The Passion According to G. H. In the next section, he focuses on selected Biblical motives and shows semantic shifts in the work. The thesis is subsequently concluded by a brief reflection on the function of Biblical themes. Azulejos in Portugal with the historical scenes, so called painéis historiados in the 18th century

This bachelor thesis deals with the Portuguese historizing panels azulejos in the 18th century. Initially, it presents a preview of the Ciclo dos Mestres and the works of the painter of Azulejos Manuel dos Santos. In particular, it analyzes its set of panels in the entrance hall of the monastery São Vicente de Fora in Lisbon. The author of the thesis submits a detailed analysis of the depictions of historical events of the 12th century in order to defend their artistically historical credibility. Attention is also paid to the portraits of the kings of the Burgundy dynasty and the Bragança dynasty, testifying to historical circumstances. In the final part of the research carried out on the basis of personal knowledge, the author emphasizes the beneficial informative testimony of the depicted areas of Lisbon and Santarém. and the artistic settlement with the Spanish domination of the Habsburgs. Transformations of the Concept of House (An Analysis of the House in the 20th Century Portuguese Novel)

The dissertation under the title Transformations of the Concept of House (An Analysis of the House in the 20th Century Portuguese Novel) endeavours to map the concept, portrayal and primarily the transformations of the space of a house, which is at the same time interpreted as an archetypical space universal in the 20th century Portuguese novel. Following the introduction and a summary of various literary theory approaches to the analysis of a house, Chapter 2 focuses in particular on a topological analysis and an analysis of the symbolic space. The topos of the house is fundamental for thematology and literary topology. A house, representing either a dwelling place, a temporary refuge or a home, is an essential space in the majority of literary stories; it is a certain static counterpart to a literary character, it forms their background or represents an aim to which they are heading. Its organization may reflect a character's nature or emphasize a significant contradiction between the space and the human being inhabiting it. As the role, function, form and significance of a literary character and of other constitutive elements of a narrative text were transformed in the course of the 20th century, the concept of the space of a house also underwent significant changes. Czechs in Portugal The work aims to map the diverse factors which shaped the perspectives of Czech travelers on Portugal in the 20th and 21th century. It focuses on the analysis and synthesis of seven travel journals from this period: Za horama pyrenejskýma by Jiří Guth-Jarkovský (1902), Kde země končí a moře začíná by Roman Vlach (1962), Jak jsem se stal Portugalcem by Alexandr Petrželka (1980), Poloostrov na konci světa by Josef Hotmar (1989), Jak jsme pili portské by Jan Šmíd (2004), Výlet do Portugalska aneb Poetický průvodce na cestu tam a zpátky by Jan Burian (2005) and Vstávám a pokračuji v cestě by František Lízna (2010). The first chapter defines the travel journal as a literary genre, its characteristics, and the changes of its functions throughout history. The second chapter is concerned with the analysis of the individual travel journals. First, the profile of the author, his motivations for the journey, and the writing of the book are analyzed, and subsequently the language, form and contents of the piece of work. The bachelor thesis consists in the translation of the story O Cavaleiro da Dinamarca written by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen. The theoretical part of the bachelor thesis presents the information about the literary and historical context, the author and his work, especially children's and youth literature. The next part of the thesis comprises the genre of children's literature and deals with the specifics of its translation. The second part of the bachelor thesis comprises of the translation and the commentary which contains translation analysis of the source text and analysis of translation problems and translation shifts.
Multiplication of Subject in Mário de Sá-Carneiro's Fiction

This bachelor thesis deals with the theme of the subject and its multiplication in selected prose works by the Portuguese modernist Mário de Sá-Carneiro. Initially, the literary development of the so-called First Portuguese Modernism is presented in the context of the avant-garde, followed by a section on the author's life and work. The thesis essentially defines itself against the former biographical interpretation of Sá-Carneiro's texts and presents an outline of three theoretical approaches to the multiplication of the subject. In the next section a brief literary-historical excursion on the issue of doppelgangers is presented, followed by an analysis of the novel ​A Confissão de Lúcio (Lucio's Confession) and the prose poem ​Eu-próprio o Outro ​(I Myself - The Other). The subject and its fragmentation are observed and interpreted in the context of the author's poetry, within an intersectionist discourse and in relation to the texts of other authors. Particular attention is paid to the means and manifestations of the subject multiplication, governed in the Sá-Carneiro's work by several predetermined principles.
Past, Present and Future in the Work of José Eduardo Agualusa

This study aims to analyze the aspect of national and cultural identity in the works of the contemporary Angolan writer José Eduardo Agualusa. This master‛s thesis contains a brief introduction to the history of Angola, the processes of shaping society and an introduction to Agualusa and his literary works. In addition to that ideas of postcolonial thinking and literary tendencies in postmodern times are discussed, which influenced the works of this writer. Furthermore, aspects of cultural identity and related views on human and historical memory are investigated. An analysis of selected works, demonstrates Agualusa's criticism concerning the political situation in Angola and his technique of using different concepts of Angolan identity.
