Prevention of Dental Caries in Orthodontic Patients
Holoubková, Lucie ; Koťová, Magdalena (advisor) ; Urbanová, Wanda (referee)
Aim: The aim of the bachelor thesis was to summarize the knowledge about orthodontics and dental caries in orthodontic patients. Furthermore, it observes the degree of deterioration of the biological factor of the dentition after 2 to 3 years of orthodontic treatment in the form of increased caries formation or newly made fillings. Introduction: With the placement of fixed orthodontic appliances, retention sites for plaque accumulation in the oral cavity increase. Its regular and correct removal is therefore an important factor both for the prevention of damage to the hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity and for the quality outcome of orthodontic therapy. We repeatedly observe that patients who are very well motivated and maintain adequate oral hygiene at the beginning of orthodontic treatment show a decline in motivation over time and the oral condition deteriorates. Patients in whom orthodontic treatment must be interrupted or discontinued due to caries or severe gingivitis are no exception. Methods: OPG images of orthodontic patients with an interval of 2 to 3 years were evaluated. The cohort consisted of 50 patients from the Department of Orthodontics and Cleft Defects of the Dental Clinic of the University Hospital Královské Vinohrady born between 2006 and 2012. Subsequently, all newly...
Dental Hygienist Care for Patients with Removable Orthodontic Appliances
Čučková, Tereza ; Koťová, Magdalena (advisor) ; Urbanová, Wanda (referee)
This bachelor's thesis focuses on the issue of removable orthodontic appliances and aims to identify the most effective hygienic care technique for microorganisms' quantity reduction. Firstly, the thesis provided a summary of basic information about removable orthodontic appliances. Further, the autor defined on the physiological microflora of the oral cavity as one of the main sources of bacteria inhabiting the removable appliance and accordingly focused on this area. Moreover, the reader is introduced to appropriate techniques of removable orthodontic appliance care, such as machine tools, chemicals, and natural substances. Finally, the role of a dental hygienist is defined as the primary source of motivation and instructions regarding maintaining and retaining oral health. Within the practical part, the thesis focused on the identification of microorganisms' spectrum part colonizing the removable orthodontic appliance. The antimicrobial efficacy of natural extracts was subsequently examined with the use of identified microorganisms. Specifically, the impacts of Azadirachta indica, Cinnamomum Verum, and citric acid were explored. When tested by the disc diffusion method, only citric acid proved to directly impact the susceptibility of isolated bacteria. Therefore, this substance was identified as...
"Morphological Anomalies of the Dental Crown "
Vomelová, Kristýna ; Urbanová, Wanda (advisor) ; Gojišová, Eva (referee)
Introduction: Morphological anomalies of the dental crown are deviations in the shape of the crown of the tooth, which can adversely affect the function of the tooth and cause difficulties in dental hygiene. Dental crown shape differences often become a retention site for dental microbial plaque, creating areas that are difficult to clean or uncleanable, which represent a risk factor for oral disease. Aim: The aim of the bachelor thesis was to recapitulate the individual morphological anomalies of the dental crown and to document the frequency of their occurrence in the examined group of individuals. Methods: The study included 50 individuals - 33 women and 17 men aged 16 to 48 years. The inclusion criterion for the study was permanent dentition after second molars without any prosthetic work. The data collection took place from November 2021 to February 2022 in the teaching premises of the Stomatology Department of the 3rd Faculty of Medicine of Charles University, where students of the 3rd year of the 3rd Faculty Medicine of Charles University and patients who came for dental hygiene were examined. Furthermore, the research was carried out at the Mazurská polyclinic, where the author of the thesis attended the external professional practice during the semester.
