The shadow of sport
Stróžiková, Anna ; Lokšík, Martin (advisor) ; Záruba, Robert (referee)
The written bachelor thesis focuses on the issue of eating disorders in performance and elite athletes. The main part of the thesis is a short journalistic film entitled The Shadows of Sport, depicting the narratives of three successful female athletes who have encountered the disease during their careers. The interviewees describe personal experiences such as the cause of the disease, the treatment process and the lasting effects that still plague them today. They give the viewer a little look behind the scenes of sporting competitions and give a glimpse into their own mindsets. The work also includes a short statement from former biathlete Gabriela Soukalova, whose book, along with its subsequent rejection by society, inspired the author to tackle this topic. The written work aims to present the viewer of the audiovisual film with background information about eating disorders in order to better understand the journalistic film. In addition to defining the basic concepts and treatments, the paper also deals with explaining how and why the disease occurs in the sports sector in the first place, who can help athletes avoid difficulties of this type, and what health complications most often occur in patients.
