The Angel of the Lord Went Out and Slew 185,000 - Theology 2 Kings 18-20
Luštinec, Vít ; Čapek, Filip (advisor) ; Sláma, Petr (referee)
Te biblical verses of 2 Kings 18-19 mention the military campaign of King Sennacherib of Assyria against Judah in the late 8th century BC. After conquering the fortifed cities of Judah, Sennacherib sent an ar- my with envoys from Lachish to Jerusalem, the seat of King Hezekiah. Te Judean king cries out to the Lord to spare the city. God hears Hez- ekiah's prayer and sends an angel who slaughters 185,000 men in the Assyrian camp, and Sennacherib returns to the capital of his empire, Nineveh, where he dies. Te aim of this paper is to compare the texts of the Book of Kings with other biblical and extra-biblical sources and to separate the historical and theological accounts of the verses on the basis of their comparison. Keywords: Book of Kings, Judea, Israel, Sennacherib, Neo-Assyrian Empire, Hezekiah, Old Testament, Deuteronomistic Teology, Archaeology, Herodotus
The psalms' rhetoric of suffering
Jonczy, Roman ; Sláma, Petr (advisor) ; Vymětal, Mikuláš (referee)
Psalms have fascinated many for centuries. They are the prayers of the people of Israel, widely used in Christianity as well. The psalms are not only a source of inspiration but above all the concentrated experience of those, who call themselves Jehovah's worshipers. The concentrated experience of life presents many shocking testimonie about the relationship between man and God, especially if one is experiencing suffering and God becomes the only true source of salvation to a man facing a hopeless situation. The person refers to this source in his speech, and he recites his requests and his calls. This thesis attempts to examine and approach the mechanism of the speech of the Psalmist, who, in his crisis, reverts to the fact that he believes God will free him from this situation. The theologians Walter Brueggeman and Claus Westrmann contributed to the mapping of this mechanism by extraordinary insights, from which the author of this work also draws. In this thesis I describe the phases of complaints and praises, each of which consists of individual steps: addressing, complaining, pleading, motivation, cursing but also assurance of hearing, promise and praise. Keywords Bruggemann, Westrmann, psalm, psalmist, old testament, crisis, suffering, prayer, complaint, plea, motivation, curse, praise, God,...

The purpose of this thesis is to define the function of the Jordan River in the Old Testament by looking at five specific Old Testament stories. The insight of the natural and social sciences brings interesting connections to the biblical research and leads to reflection about the relationship between the Old Testament Jordan River and the Jordan River that flows in Israel today.
Using Old Testament Themes and Their Original Interpretation in the Works of John Steinbeck
Straková, Kateřina ; Čapek, Filip (advisor) ; Sláma, Petr (referee)
Using Old Testament Themes and their Original Interpretation in the works of John Steinbeck 5 The issue of my thesis is the reflection of biblical themes and narratives in secular literature. In the concrete, I am focusing on the specific interpretation of Old Testament themes in the works of an American author of the 1st half of the 20 th Century, John Steinbeck. From his novels, I have chosen three for the analysis - To a God Unknown, The Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden. I approached the novels with criticism, yet I did not strive to give the stories a meaning different from the intention of the author. I am focusing especially on biblical symbolism used in the novels and on parallelisms between biblical and Steinbeck's narratives. Both the symbolism and the parallelisms are traced in each novel separately, yet I try to point to the motives which are used in all of the novels chosen, e.g. settling the "promissed land". Steinbeck starts with simple symbols and then he passes to more complicated and elaborated ones. The symbolism of first names is a good example for this. Steinbeck starts with simple symbolism in the novel To a God Unknown, a symbolism I called direct symbolism where a character bears the same name as his/her biblical pattern. In The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck elaborates what I...

The Ten Commandments (Ex 20 and Dt 5); Exegesis and Placement in the Canonical and Historical Context and Theological Profile
Polcer, Josef ; Sláma, Petr (advisor) ; Sláma, Petr (referee)
This thesis presents the basic exegesis of the Old Testament text in the second book of Moses Chapter 20 and in the fifth book Moses chapter 5. It seeks to inclusion in the historical framework with regard to basic theological accents. For the most part is on the historical-critical approach, which revealed the formation of the text in the course of history and its position in the context of the Old Testament canon. Almost certainly it can be said that the final text of the Ten Commandments is set in the deuteronomistic history that was specific to their linguistic terminology and theological accents. An outline of numerical functions in Tanak
Klíma, Lukáš ; Prudký, Martin (advisor) ; Sláma, Petr (referee)
This essay deals with the function of the numerical relations within the Hebrew Bible(Tanak). It proceeds on three levels. The first level presents the formative function of numbers, which by means of of gematria influences the shape of proper names and numerical data. The second level is concerned with the compositional function of numbers, important for the formal aspect of poetic texts in particular. Any numerical datum is carrying out this function through deliberate number of forming elements (i.e. sections, words and letters). The third level focuses on the kerygmatic function of numbers, opperative by commonly shared symbolism and illustrated by several historiographic and apocalyptic texts. The numerical symbols reflect the quality of objects they relate to and, at the same time, they contextulize them within Biblical canon. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
