The thesis presents the successful Quechan merchants from Otavalo, that managed turn their own culture and craft into prosperous business. These merchants travel with their business all around the world, where they bring their customs as well as their festivities. Their current identity has been formed throughout the history, when the most important influence had the Inca and Spanish occupation. Although the indigenous communities are usually the poorest people in Ecuador, Quechua people from Otavalo have, thanks to their business, earned privileged status in Otavalo, where they have great influence. This influence extends even to the national level, especially trough indigenous movement, in which Otavalo played important role.
