Relevance of Lonergan's theory of understanding for the method in theology
Regner, Jan ; Pelc, Bogdan (advisor) ; Pospíšil, Ctirad Václav (referee)
The aim of the paper called "Relevance of the Lonergan's Theory of Understanding for the Method in Theology" is to present the contribution of the Lonergan's original epistemological studies for a method, not only in theology. In the base of the paper, there are a question how much is important or even necessary for theology to consider its own methodology in the context of interdisciplinary dialog between philosophy, theology and natural sciences. Lonergan's Transcendental Method is based on his epistemological understanding, especially his so called "Cognitive Structure". He describes our cognitive operations and classifies them in several levels. First three are empirical, intellectual and rational. According Lonergan, from the last level we normally move to ethical campus. Then he realizes that in human lives there are phenomena which we could call intellectual, moral or religious conversions. These are fundamental for the Transcendental Method. Lonergan then defines eight steps of the Method: research, interpretation, history, dialectic, foundations, doctrines, systematics and communications. Some critics object that Lonergan's methodological investigations are too general to be a theological method. Nevertheless, we have to recognize his inspiring attempt to find an adequate way to do...
Dynamic Cognitional Structure as Foundations of the Method in Theology
Regner, Jan ; Novotný, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Altrichter, Michal (referee) ; Vokoun, Jaroslav (referee)
The goal of this doctoral thesis is to take a close look at the process of human understanding as foundations of theological method in postmodern age. In the very center of my research is so called "dynamic cognitional structure" presented by Canadian thinker, Bernard Lonergan. The purpose of the study is to analyze his epistemology in the context of the "generalized empirical method" and to investigate the relevance of this method for contemporary theology. The thesis also focuses on the question if theological epistemology could be based on intellectual knowledge only, or how far it requires authentic spiritual life of an existential subject. Key words: transcendental theology, cognitional structure, method in theology, Bernard Lonergan, authenticity
Wittgenstein's terms Sprachspiel and Lebensform and their relevance for the contemporary theology
Regner, Jan ; Sousedík, Prokop (referee)
The main aim of this work is analyze Wittgensteins' terms Sprachspiel and Lebensform ; and adumbrate their relevance for the theological method. Wittgenstein' impact reaches into various fields of theology. It is demonstrated on concrete examples of thinkers. And so we can see, what might happen to a theology given the full (or at least partial) Wittgenstein treatment. Some thinkers interact with his writings, but they reject his essential ideas. The work conclude with thesis that the appropriation of Wittgensteins's thoughts in theology could be fruitful, but it could not be blind and idolizing.
