Echinoids, their evolution and response to the Cretaceous paleoenvironmental events

The bachelor thesis briefly summarizes knowledges about the evolution of sea urchins (Echinoidea; Echinodermata) with a focus on the successful order Spatangoida and their diversification in the dynamic Mesozoic environment. Attention is paid in particular to significant palaeoceanic changes, such as anoxic events (OAE = Oceanic Anoxic Event) and extinctions. Responses to OAE1-OAE3, as well as the last mass extinction (within the "Big Five") at the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary, are briefly discussed. Sea urchins, as an important part of benthic communities, prove to be a suitable model group not only for understanding the dynamics of evolution, but also successful strategies for surviving crisis events and new adaptations. Systematics of eocrinoid echinoderms

This work deals with systematics of eocrinoid echinoderms but also with their morphology and classification within the echinoderms. Two theories concerning systematic of eocrinoid echinoderms are compiled in this work. UBAGHS (1967) suggested the first version of systematics. SPRINKLE (1973) suggested the second one, still used version of systematics. Work is also focused on the occurrence of eocrinoid echinoderms in Cambrian and Ordovician rocks of the Barrandien area.
Eocrinoid echinoderms from mid-Cambrian of the Barrandian area

This thesis deals with the topic of eocrinoid echinoderms from the Barrandian area (Příbram- Jince Basin, mid-Cambrian, Drumian). The thesis is presented as a compilation of five published papers and an introduction. The introduction is an overview of current knowledge about eocrinoid echinoderms. It also includes links to new information from the five included papers, and serves as a unifying element for these professional publications. The topic of the thesis is focused on a revision of selected specimens of eocrinoid echinoderms, and the study of their ontogeny, phylogeny, palaeoecology and systematic position. This thesis has also improved our understanding of early evolution of basal blastozoans. This is the first study of Cambrian ontogenetic development on eocrinoid material from the Czech Republic. Complete ontogeny was described on the genus Akadocrinus, and it was possible to establish two basic phases in the development of this genus: pre-epispire-bearing phase and epispire-bearing phase. The new primitive blastozoan Felbabkacystis is described from the Jince Formation - its unique body plan highlights evolution of the body wall among blastozoans. Palaeoecology and phylogeny of the genus Vyscystis was studied, and phylogenetic analysis suggests a basal position of lepidocystoids among...

Ontogenetic development of Cambrian eocrinoid echinoderms of the Barrandian area

This diploma thesis presents the first study focused on the ontogenetic development of eocrinoid echinoderms in the Czech Republic. Parsley's work (2012) on ontogeny of the genus Gogia from south China is the model study. The aim of this thesis is a comparable study of ontogeny of eocrinoid echinoderms from Cambrian of the Barrandian area. Akadocrinus jani Prokop, 1962 was studied. Using detailed morphological description and measurement of various parameters, three different ontogenetic stages have been established: juvenile ontogenetic stage, mature ontogenetic stage and gerontic ontogenetic stage. Thecal height is the deciding factor for the determination of the specific ontogenetic stage. Further, during ontogeny of this species some trends in changes in the size of body parts are observed (e.g., changes in the diameter of thecal plates). In-depth study of morphological details showed that the originally distinguished two species, Akadocrinus jani Prokop, 1962 and Akadocrinus nuncius Prokop, 1962, represent one species only. Preventive and remedial conservation methodology for the collection specimens falling within palaeontology and mineralogy endangered by sulphide degradation products

The methodology is a complex system of procedures involving experimentally verified as well as modified already known methods, completely novel procedures, and their combinations. Many technologies as well as materials are employed for the first time in this field. Modifications of the existing methods bring either effectivity improvements, invasivity reduction or both. This methodology is the very first to cover all phases of the collection material treatment from acquisition to final storage. The methodology structuring follows logical succession of procedures. The theoretical chapter summarizes grounds of the degradation process, materials endangered with sulphide degradation and products of it. Area maps of types of sulphides labelled by process of origin, and a map of high-risk Czech localities are also involved. This introductory chapter is followed by part devoted to methods of field work and early care, suitable preventative collection care, and procedures of the remedial care. A special remedial care chapter for paper-documentation is also involved. This chapter is followed by instrumental methods useful for detection of degradation products and their influence on specimen condition. A separate part focuses on suitable ways of documentation. The safety-hazards chapter closes the methodology. The methodology is equipped with a list of references and flow diagrams helping the user to find the suitable procedure fast and easily.
