Critical Edition of Selected Christmas Songs of V. K. Holan Rovenský

The thesis proposes a commented critical edition of five songs from the Christmas part of the Capella regia musicalis hymnal (Knihopis 1458), edited by Karel Holan Rovenský and published by Jiří Laboun the elder. The attempt to apply interdisciplinary linguistic-musicological approach results in an outcome that reflects the relation between language and music. However, the main focus of the thesis lies in the language characterization of the edited texts. Its main goal is to contribute to the scientific research of the baroque language in hymnography production and to make the songs accessible to the general public.

Neologisms motivated by names of political parties and movements

This thesis describes new names of political parties and movements in Czech. The first part will summarize findings from the relevant literature. Material basis for the paper will be the database NEOMAT (ÚJČ AV ČR), on-line archive of media texts Newton Mediasearch, ČNK corpuses, available dictionaries and primary texts. Neologisms will be described according to word formation types. One part of this thesis will also be a comparison of the material of the thesis with material of selected dictionaries. Results will be summarized in a clear conclusion. Work will be in accordance with bibliographic standards. In the appendix of the thesis will be table of discovered words together with the number of their occurrences. Karel Havlíček's German letters in Czech translations

This thesis analyzes the Czech translations of Karel Havlíček's German letters carried out by Ladislav Quis (1903) and Miroslav Novotný (1941), and the revisions made by Jaroslava Janáčková (1995) in Novotný's translation. In the introduction, the present-day situation concerning the publication of Havlíček's correspondence is outlined. A brief description of the state of the Czech language at the time of creation of Havlíček's Czech letters followes the introduction. The analysis itself focuses especially on the possible influence of the original language on the translations and the tendency to avoid such influence. Therefore, in the theoretical parts of individual chapters, some terminology regarding German grammar is explained. Language resources used by individual translators are also compared with the means common at the time of translation and in Havlíček's Czech letters to determine the extent to which the respective translations display tendency to archaize or modernize the language. The obtained data serve as a basis for determining the impression of identicity of the writer in the Czech letters and in the translations from German.

A Contrastive Study of Aspectual Means of Expression in Czech and German Narrative Texts

The thesis deals with a contrastive study of various aspectual means of expression in Czech and German. First it presents the aspectual systems in both languages as they are described in traditional models of aspectuality. Czech and German express aspectual meanings by different means. Hence a contrastive analysis of both languages is based on a mutual semantic feature of telicity, which constitutes the main semantic opposition in both studied aspectual systems. The analysis focuses on a limited group of Czech and German Incremental verbs. For the Incremental verbs it is characteristic the homomorphism, the relation between event development and manipulation of the object (constitution, termination, modification). Incremental verbs include in their direct object the thematic role of Incremental Patient. The goal of the paper is to present and describe with support of corpus data the relevant means of expression of telicity and other aspectual meanings: the telicity of a verb is determined by verbal semantics, relation between a predicate and its nominal phrase that functions as an Incremental Patient and certain semantic properties of an Incremental Patient. Czech of German Speakers (case study)

This thesis is a case study which examines the use of the Czech language by two native German speakers considering the aspect of phonetics (or in other words considering the influence of phonetics on the orthographic transcription), morphology, syntax, lexicology and, in part, stylistics. Some mistakes, which the German speakers make for various reasons, are possible to be derived out of the analysis; the mistakes belong mostly to the problematics of the transfer linguistics. It is possible to improve the teaching of Czech as a foreign language by tracing such mistakes.

Analytical verbo-nominal constructions in Václav Hájek's Czech chronicle (1541)

In Chapters 1 and 2, the thesis delimits analytical verbo-nominal constructions (AVNS) based on the relevant literature. AVNS are phrases which consist of a verb with a general meaning, expressing categorical semantic features (e.g. state, change of state, and cause of change of state), and an abstract substantive: dát radu - to give advice, položit otázku - to ask a question, být v nesnázích - to be in a difficult situation. Phrases with a substantive in nominative case (jednání probíhá - the negotiation is proceeding) and with an adverb (dát najevo - to put forth) are also included in the AVNS classification. In Chapter 3, the phrases excerpted from a Middle Czech text of 1541 are classified according to their formal features and some groups of related phrases are also described. In Chapter 4, some models of AVNS-classification are critically evaluated and supplemented according to their semantic features. The excerpted phrases are classified using the following features: the state/action opposition, action phases, causativity, etc. In Chapter 5, the functions of AVNS in text are analyzed (e.g. as indicators that a given text is on a higher stylistic level).
