Education and ethnic identity of romany children in Polish and Czech schools

The discrimination against the Romani people has been ongoing for many years. It has been largely influenced by both the cultural difference and the separation of the Roma community. This has caused problems with the participation of this ethnic group in education. As for the education policies which the post-communist states have adopted with regard to the Roma minority, they have changed significantly, largely due to the political transformation, the integration with the European Union and globalisation. Those states have abandoned the idea of assimilating this ethnic group so that the Roma people can preserve their identity, culture and language. As a result of this the Romani have ceased to be the object of the state's policy and have become the subject of it. This paper gives a general presentation of the education of the Roma people as exemplified by the situation of it in Poland and the Czech Republic, in the context of the ongoing changes which are shaping contemporary education systems. It discusses the characteristics of the Romani ethnic group and its situation as well as the conditions of the Romani's participation in the culture and education of a majority state.
