Stereotypes about aging population

First, the paper presents stereotypes about aging and its impact on the aging population. It is indisputable that these stereotypes, no matter whether they are positive or negative, have an influence on psychological as well as physical health. Second, the paper informs about memory training programme for seniors and the part of research focused on subjectively perceived changes in relevant aspects. Research findings are discussed in terms of possibilities to influence the stereotypes about the aging population.

In the paper, we consider the influence of long-term isolation stay on visual space perception. Six crewmembers of the ground-based experiment simulating manned flight to Mars was closed for three and half months to the facility restricting view to no more than a few meters distances. We expect that such restriction would impair the observer’s ability to utilize information from perspective, which among others will manifest itself in the observer’s changed susceptibility to geometrical illusions. By the time of KUZ IX conference, the data from all sessions are still not available.

Cognitive function training in ageing population

The aim of the project is to contribute to the reduction of negative demographic trend in Czech Republic. In the first stage we assess the efficiency of memory training in ageing population (subjective meaning, objective change in performance; immediately after training and 6 months later). We compare the results with a control group using the same tests.

Episodic memory for virtual beings

Episodic memory is from the psychological point of view the memory for personal events. The problems of episodic memory in virtual humans haven't been studied deeply yet, despite it is a key aspect of virtual beings' believability in simulations, virtual drama or some computer games. The character without episodic memory can't answer simple questions, e.g. what he did the day before, and it will suffer problems, when it is interrupted because the information on interrupted task will disappear from memory. In this report the model of symbolic episodic memory for virtual beings based on Gibson's affordance theory is introduced and the prototype implementation is presented. The believability aspects are discussed e.g. whether the character can reproduce his day story and also the technical parameters (memory, access speed) are reported. The report mentions the phenomenological dimension of the model, and the differences between event forgetting in psychology and in the model are compared.

Thinking manifested in body

In this report we review several methods for indirect monitoring of cognitive activity. Human thinking, concentration and emotional excitement are observable in pupilar changes, electrodermal activity, eye movements or reaction times. The methods are first introduced on general level, then experimental results comparing outputs of each method during Word Association Test are reported.

Cognition 2006

Researchers from the fields of psychology, philosophy, neuroscience, linguistics, biology and computer science discussed on the current state of the research on cognition. The conference Kognice 2006 offered the platform for the interdisciplinary dialogue and for learning about the very different approaches and languages which are linked by their curiosity on the nature of the human mind.

The Virtual Being's Mind

Virtual beings are being used in computer games, film industry, education and even in therapy. They need a functional model of mind – to process the signals from environment, to set their goals and to act. In this work we try to define the term of virtual being and to illustrate this concept in one particular project. Virtual beings in IVE Project have three remarkable features: 1) their perception is based on Gibson's theory of affordances, 2) their actions are planned using Belief-Desire-Intention theory, 3) their behavior can be dynamically simplified using Level-of-Detail technique.

Word association test – physiological reactions and semantic similarities

His report is focused on physiological reaction measurements during the word association test. The results of preliminary experiment (N=14) are described. In this experiment association responses, physiological reactions (electrodermal activity) and semantic rating of stimuli were recorded. The obtained results may be visualized on individual level as semantic maps combined with electrodermal activity peaks.

Why is the border between a virtual being and its world fuzzy

In this article we first introduce the IVE project (Intelligent Virtual Environment - developed in 2005 at MFF UK, Prague) and ISMA model (Intention - Suitability - Materialisation - Advice) and describe related theoretical issues of the project. IVE is a simulator of large virtual worlds populated with virtual beings, which uses a new model called ISMA for virtual world representation. This model is inspired by Gibson's affordace theory and Bratman's theory of practical reasoning. Gradually we realized that some project results also have psychological and philosophical interpretation, which is being discussed in this article.

Professionals interested in the topic of human mind and working in different fields of science had the opportunity to meet at the “Cognition 2006” conference. Interdisciplinary understanding and openness of the language used was stressed in an interdisciplinary dialogue lead from the positions of psychology, philosophy, medical sciences, artificial intelligence, linguistics, cultural anthropology and other sciences.
