Efetivita zahraniční pomoci: Případová studie Haiti
Hudáková, Miriama ; Havlová, Radka (advisor) ; Knotková, Vladimíra (referee)
My master's thesis deals with a form of soft power and foreign policy, the development aid. In the three chapters I provide an analysis of the potential impacts of such financial flows in the particular case of Haiti. This country has become an exemplar of the fact that even billions of dollars do not have to contribute to improving the economic and living conditions, on the contrary, aid in combination with incorrectly set policies can become an instrument of destruction. Using econometric models and policy analysis I examine the impact of official development assistance on the political, economic, environmental and social sector. At the end of the work I list recommendations for the future, which could contribute to improving the situation.
Intervention in Afghanistan: Soviet and American experience
Tzoumas, Janis ; Matějka, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Knotková, Vladimíra (referee)
This diploma thesis analyzes the approach of the Soviet Union and that of the US-led coalition to state-building in Afghanistan, which today, as in the past, takes place against the backdrop of counterinsurgency warfare. The analysis in the field of politics, economy and security shows that in both cases the intervening powers have focused on building a strongly centralized system of government, in spite of the fact that the Afghan countryside's relationship to the Kabul-based government had traditionally been characterized by broad autonomy. The intervening powers' efforts have futhermore been associated with the export of exogenous political structures and for this reason attention is also drawn to the question to what extent the intervening powers' approach to the modernization of Afghan society has contributed to the escalation of unrelenting conflict.

The thesis focuses on the activities of the United Nations in Iraq. The thesis as such aims to analyse efficiency of the UN efforts in Iraq, with emphasis on the period after the war in 2003. In the second part the function of the UN in the country is analysed based on, among others, the project reports of the multilateral funds created to reconstruct Iraq. The third part focuses on the empirical research and it gives the theoretical knowledge into contrast with the opinions of the Iraqis themselves obtained through an inquiry.

Hostová, Slavomíra ; Maslowski, Nicolas (advisor) ; Knotková, Vladimíra (referee)
The Central Asia region, that once used to be condemned for a period of time, is now a golden target of the world leaders because of its natural resources so essential for the world. This attempt to get the access to important energies could cause worries about The New great game in Central Asia to many people. The aim of this thesis is to compare the power leadership of four world leaders, Russia, China, the USA and the EU, based on their hard and soft power in Central Asia region and to investigate the possible clash of interests of these countries quoting The New great game, Huntington's theory of Clash of civilisations and Brzezinski's Great Chessboard. At the very end of the theses there is an agreement of their interests, which would bring the answer to the negative assumptions and worries about the development of competition of the great powers in Central Asia.

Zhodnocení vlivu vybraných ukazatelů na tělesné rozměry a úhly končetin koní
Knotková, Veronika
The goal of diploma thesis was evaluating the effect of observed factors, which is breed, age, the type of stabling, feeding, a mount of the work, the way of hooves trimming and interval between hooves trimming, on angles of limbs. The database for statistical evaluating was made by manual inserting of data after measuring, capturing and writting down the information about the horse. Angles of limbs was measured by computer program from photos. In theoretical part of thesis I described anatomy and physiology of the horse's limbs and hooves, mechanics of movement and defects of positions. In practical part I have statistically evaluated influence of observed effects on limbs angles using a general linear model GLM and if a statistical significant influence, the data were evaluated using the multiple comparisons by the Scheffe method. The average values of data were compared with values of ideal.

Juška, Bohdan ; Knotková, Vladimíra (advisor) ; Havlová, Radka (referee)
My work refers to the modern history of Cambodia and the region of Indochina with the accent on the Khmer Rouge regime. It explores the topic of the impact of the Khmer Rouge regime on three levels- local, regional and global. It gives a brief outline of the historical development from the war of independence to the peace talks in the 1980s. It covers some key historical events, e.g. the Lon Nol's coup d'état in 1970, followed by the Khmer Rouge takeover in 1975, the genocide regime, the response of the neighbouring countries, the Vietnamese invasion in 1978, the establishment of The People's Republic of Kampuchea, reconstruction, peace efforts. It deals with both domestic development and the international and diplomatic relations as well. The work also studies the impact of the volatile Cambodian history on the region and the response of the bi-polar world of the 1970s and 1980s, in the context of the Cold War, primarily of the USA, the Soviet Union and China. It attempts to reveal the Khmer Rouge doctrines, the nature, characteristics and origin of their extremist ideology, the connection with global communist teaching. It also focuses on the aspect of the international law. Other topics mentioned in the work are refugee issues and international tribunals.
European Union Foreign Policy towards China since 2000
Weselá, Petra ; Matějka, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Knotková, Vladimíra (referee)
The topic of this final thesis is EU-China relations since 2000. EU and China are both relatively new actors in the international relations. EU and PRC both have certain potential for the future. EU is an organization of 27 member states, which together make the biggest world economy. China is under Chinese Communist Party leadership; it has the biggest world population and large and fast growing economy. Diplomatic relations were established in 1975 and since then, EU and China have been cooperating in political, economic and other areas. Since 2003 there has been a strategic partnership, which now includes more than 50 sectorial dialogues. On the other hand, there are some problems and drawbacks in the bilateral relations: human rights, Tibet, Taiwan, arms embargo and trade disputes. In this thesis it is examined, whether economic cooperation or European values (human rights, democracy and rule of law) are more important in mutual relations.
