The undissolvable color. On Adorno's disclosing critique.
Stoel, Hendrik Lambert ; Goddard, Jean-Christophe (advisor) ; Klass, Tobias Nikolaus (referee)
The undissolvable colour - On Adorno's disclosing critique Abstract For a long time, the hermeneutical tradition and that of Critical Theory have been considered as antithetical. In the work of Theodor W. Adorno, a key representative of Critical Theory, both traditions coincide. The central thesis of this essay is that the meaning of 'critique' for Adorno can only be fully grasped if it is at the same time understood as an interpretation of social reality. This essay attempts to demonstrate that his critique is fundamentally a disclosing critique. In the light of this thesis, several aspects of Adorno's critique are examined and several problems delineated. Key words: Adorno, critique, interpretation, Critical Theory, praxis.
The violence of law and the problem of justice in Benjamin and Derrida
Kenç, Serdar ; Klass, Tobias Nikolaus (advisor) ; Trawny, Peter (referee)
The aim of the present study is to reveal the problematic relation between violence, law and justice by the thought of Walter Benjamin and Jacques Derrida. Following the argument that violence is inherent to the law and power, we discuss the problematic situation of justice. In this context, while Benjamin finds the "possibility" of the justice beyond the sphere of the law and power, Derrida shows us how the justice is an experience of impossibility doing deconstruction of the law. We conclude that justice cannot be reduced to the violence and to the limits of the political-juridical system. Keywords : violence, law, justice, destruction, Walter Benjamin, déconstruction, Jacques Derrida, political theology.
Capacity of Rancière's Political Subject, a Critical Review
Pao, Tsz-Ching ; Sibertin-Blanc, Guillaume (advisor) ; Klass, Tobias Nikolaus (referee)
This work seeks to examine the problematic notion of political competence in modern democratic system. In principle, everyone has the right to politics. However, in order to fulfil the role of political actor, one must meet certain specific criteria. Hence, concerning the subject of politics, it exists a fundamental paradox: it is universal and discriminative at the same time. The project of Rancière could be seen as an attempt to set out the abovementioned contradiction and to make it "productive". He considers the "sans-part" as the subject of politics, arguing that only the "sans-part" could reasonably reveal and thus correct the original wrong of democracy, a wrong done by setting up the social order at the cost of the exclusion of certain people. By means of a putting forwards a disagreement the sans-part show the inequality of the current division of common (partage du commun) and demand a fair redistribution. However, as the sans-part is usually trapped in an unfavourable position, it is not self-evident that the sans-part is able to confront the dominator and to make them admit the wrong they did. Rancière attempts to resolve the aforementioned tension by articulating another form of political competence: the aesthetic ability that everyone has. In this work, this proposal by Rancière will...
The aphorism as constellation. Nietzsche and the problem of style
Zellini, Susanna ; Sepp, Hans Rainer (advisor) ; Klass, Tobias Nikolaus (referee)
The question of style is not only relevant for the study of literature, it also forms a philosophical problem. The style is namely both the form and the mode of thought that configures itself as form. The highest expression of the tension between thought and writing is for Nietzsche the aphorism, which, although it presents itself as an expression of fragmentary thinking, at the same time lets us intuit the possibility of a unitary form, a constellation of aphorisms. This ambivalence between fragmentation and necessity of form has often lead to a 'romantic' interpretation of the aphorism, according to which the romantic fragment is understood as the desire for a new system. This thesis, however, is the attempt to interpret the aphorism not as the expression of the dualism between fragment and system, but rather as a space of experimentation, in which the fragmentary and systematic modes of thought merge as two aspects of the same process of knowledge. Keywords: Nietzsche, Aphorism, Form, Style, Constellation.
Thoughts on Intuition: Flowing as Starting Point of Philosophy
Pilz, Sebastian ; Sepp, Hans Rainer (advisor) ; Klass, Tobias Nikolaus (referee)
Philosophy always had the stigma to be distance from life. In this thesis, "Thoughts on Intuition: Flowing as starting point of philosophy", the attempt will be performed to talk about what seems to be very vague in the first consideration but will be transformed after an investigation into en 'event' and methodological necessity, if the philosophy should be dressed in the wrinkled robe of life: the intuition. It leads to the inner core of being as a method of cognition, which could not be reached by terms in an analysis mat-ter. Terms are not representing being in its full manner and themselves are even less living than they should be to handle with life. Terms are fixed constructs, in which hu-mans translate the data of the senses and which will be transformed into something that has some utility for human means. We emphasis in this thesis to put philosophy back at the side of life and to get insights which has ever been made by art: intuitive cognitions. For sure there will be a critical opposition to the results, but by showing which perfor-mance and capacity intuition has, we'll try to refuse these voices. It is most important for philosophy itself being alive. We will achieve this aim, if we open it for methods which are coming closer to life than dead building consisting of terms, which are...
Michel Foucault's concept of genealogy
Elyasi, Samira ; Klass, Tobias Nikolaus (advisor) ; Hartung, Gerald (referee)
In this paper, I try to briefly describe Michel Foucault's concept of genealogy. This concept will be located in a wider context, which includes some epistemological debates regarding the possibility of historical knowledge. In this regard I try to introduce the most basic arguments which have traditionally been used against this possibility. Genealogy will be finally presented as a way to overcome these arguments in a critical manner. Key Words: history, historical knowledge, a priori imagination, hermeneutic circle, substance, origin, power, sexuality.
Institution of spirit objective
Fabius, Léo ; Tengelyi, Laszlo (advisor) ; Klass, Tobias Nikolaus (referee)
Title : The Institution of the objective spirit Abstract : This work attempts to offer a rereading of Hegel's Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts. Through a redefined concept of the institution, it aims to "repeat" (wiederholen) some of the fundamental problems of Hegel's theory of the objective spirit. First, it proposes to identify the object of the political anthropology of social issues, which is understood as the anthropology of reflexivity spaces. This is what can be called the social dimension of the institution, or the objective spirit of the institution (Chap. I). Second, to redefine the latent theoretical architecture which enables the concrete understanding of this dimension highlighting the use and the "function"of speculative aspects in the analysis of the political test of contingency ; it will reveal the political dimension of the institution (Chap. II). Finally to reach what in the Hegelian regime is the real starting point or point of emergence, which makes both social and political conceptions effective, which logically comes first here ; this can be called the historical dimension of the institution or the institution of the objective spirit (Chap. III).
Dezentrierung: Experiment over critical theory of individuals
Pucciarelli, Daniel ; Tengelyi, Laszlo (advisor) ; Klass, Tobias Nikolaus (referee)
Mémoire de Master: "Dezentrierung: Versuch über die Kritische Theorie des Subjekts" Étudiant: Daniel Pucciarelli (4ème Promotion) Erasmus Mundus Europhilosophie ABSTRACT: The following investigation deals with the theory of subjectivity elaborated by Theodor W. Adorno throughout his philosophical career. This theory tries to construct a philosophical alternative to the notion of "object-constituting subjectivity", which remains since Kant predominant at least in Germany. This investigation analyses this theory mainly concerning its possibilities for the foundation of a renewed concept of philosophical materialism.
