Sternbergs, Franciscans and their Bechyně as a baroque town of miracles
Křečková, Kamila Marie ; Koldinská, Marie (advisor) ; Mikulec, Jiří (referee)
The bachelor's thesis deals with the town of Bechyně (southern Bohemia, the Czech Republic) in the baroque period and its monastery, which was once a famous pilgrimage site. The thesis describes the relationship between Franciscan friars and chatelaines, when noblemen presented patrons of the monastery, without whom the convent could not exist. However, this guardianship was gratefully repaid by the Franciscans. The convent was a place of representation, especially during religious festivities, but also a place of memory and eternal rest of its benefactors. The thesis reconstructs the origin of the local cult of three miraculous sculptures, with a focus on the role of Bechyně citizens in it. Collaboration between the Sternbergs and the Franciscans is described in propagation of the Virgin Mary glory as well as the fame of Bechyně (which was not only a cult site, but also a family residence of the local line of the Sternbergs). Attention is paid also to their common action in the process of recatholisation. Key words Bechyně, Bechyně Monastery, Franciscan Order, Sternbergs, Paars, patronage, three miraculous sculptures, baroque piety, Marian devotions, pilgrimage, Henricus Labe
