Military Intervention Upon Invitation or with Consent of the State

IN ENGLISH THESIS TITLE: Military Intervention Upon Invitation or with Consent of the State ABSTRACT: The aim of this thesis is to (i) define reasonably general criteria for an intervention by invitation to be lawful, and (ii) analyze two recent cases of intervention by invitation. Based on an examination of state practice, legal documents and expert opinions, the theoretical part of the thesis concludes that only government can be allowed to invite intervention, and that the intervener's rights are defined by the intersection of what the invitation allows and what is allowed by other rules of international law. Even though the so-called effective control theory still significantly impacts both state practice and expert opinions, there is an apparent shift towards accounting for democratic legitimacy of the inviter, which often causes more harm than good in practice. In this part, the author also explains why only governments should be allowed to ask for intervention, and why broadening the group of possible inviters might destabilize international community. The practical part examines whether Russian interventions in Ukraine and Syria were justified by respective invitations. Income Shocks and Ethnic Group Bias

Previous research has shown that the majority of civil conflicts break down along ethnic lines, and that ethnic tribalism harms economic performance of countries. A better understanding of the causal mechanism behind ethnic bias could help alleviate both of those problems. The author finds that income shocks have no measurable effect on ethnic out-group bias, but they might influence ethnic in-group bias. Since the regression of ethnic bias variables on income proxies likely suffers from endogeneity, the author employs the copula endogeneity correction model, which, however, does not prove to perform well with a binary dependent variable. In addition, the author demonstrates that ethnic group bias is most likely not directly influenced by variations in rainfall and that instrumenting for income with rainfall variation leads to non- robust results with even a small violations of model assumptions.

Evaluation of the Office for Protection of Competition Decisions Regarding Abuse of Dominance with an Effects-Based Approach

The bachelor thesis evaluates decisions of the (Czech) Office for the Protection of Competition (OPC) in abuse-of-dominance cases with an emphasis on its impact on consumers. The first part briefly summarises available effects-based approaches to abuse of dominance. The second part analyses five particular cases that were decided by the OPC. The author points out several recurring weaknesses of the OPC's economic reasoning. In some instances, the OPC seems to be using selective economic argumentation only to support the result at which it arrived by intuition. Economic evidence is thus interpreted with respect to the pre-defined conclusion; it is not investigated unbiasedly, and resulting justification is unsound. Although the OPC knows a wide variety of tools for economic analysis, it is sometimes unable to identify the situations at which individual tools should be applied.
