Masculine and feminine view of the Colonial War. (António Lobo Antunes and Lídia Jorge)

The present thesis, "Masculine and Feminine View of the Colonial War (António Lobo Antunes and Lídia Jorge)" concerns the peculiarity of the masculine and feminine view of the colonial war in Portuguese colonies in Africa. This thesis focuses on two world-wide known novels: Os cus de Judas by António Lobo Antunes and A costa dos murmúrios by Lídia Jorge. The aim is to reveal that the standpoint was influenced by different social status that women and men held in Salazarian Portugal and in the colonial war itself. The introductory section is devoted to a brief summary of the Portuguese history which had a major impact on the contemporary national identity. The era of the Estado Novo, the Colonial War and the Carnation Revolution was outlined. The literary situation in Portugal after the Revolution was also shortly observed. The main part began with the introduction of António Lobo Antunes & Lídia Jorge and listed out their principal writings, concentrating primarily on Os cus de Judas and A costa dos murmúrios. Afterwards the focus turns to the different position of the women and men in the colonial war, comparing how it influenced their respective lives. While Lídia Jorge observes the destructive impact of the war on its surroundings, António Lobo Antunes views the injustice on the personal basis....

Translation as a Cultural Phenomenon. Geirge Steiner: After Babel.

The thesis is based on the translation of a seminal work by George Steiner After Babel (1975), published in Triáda Publishing in 2010. The study presented in this volume is divided into three parts: the first one sketches a general portrait of George Steiner as a literary and cultural critic, language philosopher and a Jewish thinker much of his thought is dedicated to the Shoah. The second part traces Steiners intellectual profile with regards to his life story. The third part introduces Steiner's poetics and ethics of translation, paying attention especially to the phenomenon of translation in the colonial and postcolonial world. It maps the succession of metaphorical images Steiner uses to pinpoint translation and interpretation in general, especially the metafor of war and of hospitality. It concludes that a metaphorical use of the term "translation" for the whole field of understanding, interpretation and cultural tradition is not of much help in our apprehension of what translation proper is.

František Pelíšek (1896-1937). Czech painter in Brazil: the analysis of his notes

František Pelíšek was a Czech painter who entirely developed his talent after emigrating to Brazil. He left to the South American country in 1920 and two years later he became a regular professor at the Instituto Belas Artes in Porto Alegre. On the basis of his diaries we learn more about his personal life and about the life of emigrants in Brazil. We get to know other important personalities in the Czech compatriot's life and we will also mention the most important work of Pelíšek outside the art school. The thesis also deals with general questions about emigration with special focus on Brazil and tries to answer the question why that country was, at the beginning of the 20th century, such a popular destination for emigrants. Jan Klecanda - Havlasa, his life and relation to Brazil

Jan Havlasa was the first Ambassador of Czechoslovakia to Brazil, a distinguished writer and explorer. The purpose of this thesis is to present the explorer's life. Havlasa visited Slovakia after finishing secondary school, and soon after he travelled also to Italy; Saint Louis, Missouri; or the island of Tahiti. After the Paris Peace Conference in 1919, Havlasa served as the Ambassador of Czechoslovakia to Brazil (1920-1924); in 1943, Czechoslovak president Edvard Beneš called him back into diplomatic service, this time as the Ambassador to Chile. Among his most important formative experiences we can find his membership in the Opium Commission of the League of Nations. Despite the fact that Havlasa spent most of his life abroad, he never relinquished his homeland: he took interest in the situation of Czechoslovakia and fought for its independence on the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. His extensive lecturing activities, as well as his treatise Colonial Policy in Relation to the Great War earned him one year of gaol in Vienna. The thesis also takes into account Havlasa's extensive literary work and his lectures, which took place all over Czechoslovakia and during which he presented his books, photographs and travel experience to his readers and listeners.

Manifestation of free will in short stories of Miguel Torga

Key words: characters, free choice, free will, motivation, relations with authorities This thesis is focused on work of Portuguese writer Miguel Torga, author of an extensive corpus of poetic as well as prosaic works. Since this literary study is the first study of his work, the opening part of the thesis is focused on author's life and on putting his work into historical and literary context of that time. Second part of the thesis concentrates primarily on literary analysis of two selected collections of short stories, in which Miguel Torga returns to rural background of his childhood. Into this environment with archaic and pagan attributes Torga introduces strong and unique characters, who are often confronted with critical situations. At such moments author can expose characters' qualities to reader together with their motivation, relations to other individuals, to present community or to other authorities. Analysis of these basic factors enables resulting study of an existence of free will of characters and of possible manifestation of their free will in comparison to selected elements of philosophy of existentialism, which was arising in that time.

The noise of death: Raul Brandão's Humus and the problems of its translation into Slovak

Raul Brando's Humus is incontestably one of the most important works of fiction in Portuguese literature of the beginning of the twentieth century and it brings a number of innovations on the formal as well as on the ideological level. The specificity due to these innovations makes it a book the translation of which represents very particular difficulties. The paper, based on a philological analysis of the novel, identifies these difficulties and searches for usable solutions, bringing a translation of selected parts of the book into Slovak. It is divided into three parts. The first is a brief presentation of the author's work and places him in the context of portuguese and european literature. The second analyses Humus with regard to the aspects of the novel which are crucial for the understanding necessary as a base for a translation attempt. The third part exposes the general conception of the translation and its theorical bases not omitting the explanation of the choice of tha parts of the text to be translated. Expected specific problems of the translation are presented as well as suggestions of possible solutions to these. Follows the translation itself, several encountered problems are subsequently analyzed and the choices of solutions reasoned and exemplified. The conclusion establishes a hierarchy...

The poetic of primordial elements in the poetry of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen

The pressented thesis: " The Poetics of the primordial elements in the poetry of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen" explores the poetics of the sifnicicant Portuguese poet of the 20th century. We try to trace the literary evolution of the poetess in the thesis, we observe if there important changes appear in the poetess' manner of writing during her longstanding artistic career and, in particular, we explore the influense of the primordial elements on her poetry. At first we describe Andresen's books of poetry and we attend to the dominant themes of her creation - Nature, motifs of Ancient Greece, Christianity and the denomination of the things. In the second part of the thesis we explore the influence of the primordial elements on the poetic imagination of the poetess. We, gradually, discover the possible interpretations of the priomordial elements - water, earth, fire and air in her poetry. Our research is, to a certain extent, based on the works of the French psychologist Gaston Bachelard and the Portuguese literary critic Carlos Ceia.

Předmětem této práce je portugalské lidové lyrické čtyřverší,10 jejím cílem je jeho popis formální i obsahový, tedy zkoumání povahy z hlediska vnější i vnitřní struktury textu. Jaké povahy jsou útvary lidové slovesnosti? Jaké jsou jejich charakteristické vlastnosti a čím se liší od literatury umělé? Tyto útvary existují ve formě mluvené i psané. Forma psaná je buď reflexí formy mluvené, či tvoří samostatný korpus, do něhož náleží kramářská literatura a rovněž "folhas volantes" - volně prodejné listy. Forma mluvená je však, dá se říci, formou pro tento druh literatury typickou.

Eça de Queirós' Correspondência de Fradique Mendes as a translation problem

There are many books that come up to ones mind when the name of Eça de Queirós is mentioned. It is mainly Cousin Basílio and widely discussed The Sin of Father Amaro comes in second. A Correspondncia de Fradique Mendes is sometimes falsely being considered as a work of less importance but this witty book full of hidden meanings, symbols and philosophical contemplations brings many valuable innovations into Portuguese literature of the end of the nineteenth century. The paper is focused on search for solutions of difficulties that appear in connection with the translation of this specific text, on search of ways that may help the translator to overcome some obstacles of an interpretation Portuguese text into Czech. It identifies one key to success, which is a thorough comprehension of the original text and thorough knowledge of theory of translation. Such a comprehension requires wide range of information on which it can be based. These were presented in the first part of this paper, focused on author's life and work in context of Portuguese cultural background and in the second part, which analyses A Correspondncia de Fradique Mendes as a whole as well as the main character Fradique Mendes.
