The Role of the Occupational Therapist in the Treatment of Patients with Huntington's Disease

The Role of the Occupational Therapist in the Treatment of Patients with Huntington's Disease Abstract: This thesis is focused on the possible potential of occupational therapy in patients with Huntington's disease, a neurodegenerative brain disease. Currently, Huntington's disease is incurable, but there are some therapeutic methods and approaches which have positive influence on a progress of the disease. Also, early intervention of occupational therapy is needed and the occupational therapist is an irreplaceable specialist as a part of an interdisciplinary team. However, in the Czech Republic there is a little experience with occupational therapy in patients with Huntington's disease. The thesis consists of a theoretical part and a practical part. The theoretical part provides basic information about the condition and by having used specialized foreign literature it also focuses on the opportunities and goals of occupational therapy in patients with Huntington's disease. In the practical part, questionnaires which were distributed among patients and patient care providers were evaluated. Results of the questionnaires provide besides other things a brief outline of patient's problematic areas. OF BACHELOR THESIS Title of bachelor thesis: Using progressive splints in cases of spastic paresis of upper extremity The bachelor thesis is focused on usage of progressive splints in cases of spastic paresis of upper extremity. It is quite a new method in curing of spastic paresis, which try to prevent shortening muscles and others structures. The text is divided into two parts: theoretical and practical. The theoretical part is to clarify the terminology regarding spastic paresis, its basic characteristics and types, clinical symptoms and brief survey of cure of the symptoms. The theoretical part follows with differences between splints and orthosis and more detailed description of progressive splints, which are used in cases of spastic paresis for prolonged static stretching. This part contains types of progressive splints, their usage, and how to work with them. In practical part the comparison of usage of this kind of splints and therapy of upper extremity. The aim of practical part was to summarize information about progressive splints and their using. For this purpose an instruction book was put together and it is as an appendix of the thesis. OF THE BACHELOR'S THESIS Author: Marie Barborková Supervisor: MUDr. Alexandra Dlouhá Maršálková Opponent: Title of bachelor's thesis: Positioning and application of orthoses in patients after acute brain damage. Abstract: The thesis is dealing with positioning and application of orthoses to patients after a brain damage, especially to those recovering from a stroke. The first part of the thesis is theoretical and is based on literature research and supported by foreign case studies. The general information about stroke and motor neurone syndrome is defined there together with information on positioning of a hemiparetic patient after a stroke and applying orthoses to prevent contractures, their treatment and effect on spasticity. The practical part of the thesis includes a study case of a patient who used the splint at night to hold the ankle in a neutral position. Using the theoretical information the practical part observes the effect of using the splint on spasticity and passive range of motion of the foot in dorsiflexion. The aim of the theoretical part is to review the knowledge about positioning and use of orthoses and splints for patients after a stroke, mainly oriented on prevention of contractures. Telephysiotherapy of Patients after Brain Injury

Title of bachelor thesis: Telephysiotherapy of patients after brain injury Abstract: The world is developing new medical direction - Telemedicine, which includes Telerephysiotherapy (TF). In the Czech Republic is the TF new direction in physiotherapeutical care. This thesis is one of the first, which deals with the condition after brain damage and physical therapy at home using videoconference call as one of the techniques telerehabilitation. The work consists of two parts - theoretical and practical. The theoretical part describes the information about brain damage, methods of treatment and physiotherapy. It also includes information about telemedicine, especially about telerephysiotheraphy its techniques and possibilities of use. The practical part deals with the question whether is the telephysioteraphy useful in patients after brain damage and consists of three case reports of patients who underwent physiotherapy through videoconferencing at home. Knowledge based on the international studies and practical experience is discussed in the end of this thesis, where is also answered the basic question of the thesis.
