Czech literature in Finland (1993-2004)
Šroub, Jaroslav ; Dlask, Jan (advisor) ; Velkoborsky, Jan Petr (referee)
Hlavním cílem mé diplomové práce bylo sestavit bibliografický seznam děl české literatury vydaných vobdobí 1993-2004, a především zpracovat přijetí této tvorby finskou kritikou.
Kullervo as a Source of Inspiration for J. R. R. Tolkien
Kujal, Petr ; Dlask, Jan (advisor) ; Švec, Michal (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the influence of the story of Kullervo in the Kalevala on the English writer John Ronald Reuel Tolkien and his work. Firstly, the background of the birth of the Kalevala and the role of Elias Lönnrot during its creation are briefly mentioned. Secondly, Tolkien and his relationship towards the Kalevala and the Finnish language are introduced. The main part of the thesis focuses on the story of Kullervo in the Kalevala, especially as a source of inspiration for Tolkien and two of his works. The first one is The Story of Kullervo: Tolkien's unfinished attempt to retell the story itself, the other one is his own story of Túrin Turambar called The Children of Húrin. Both of these Tolkien's works are compared to the Kalevala story of Kullervo. The main purpose of the thesis is to show that Tolkien's inspiration by the story of Kullervo was crucial for his work. Keywords Kullervo, Tolkien, The Children of Húrin, Túrin Turambar, Kalevala, The Story of Kullervo.
Waltari's A Stranger Came to the Farm: a Comparison of Translation by V. Skalička (1941) and J. P. Velkoborský (2005)
Kalábová, Hana ; Dlask, Jan (advisor) ; Kovář, Michal (referee)
This master's thesis deals with the comparison of the two Czech translations of the book A Stranger Came to the Farm by Mika Waltari. The first translation was made by Vladimír Skalička in 1941 and the second one by Jan Petr Velkoborský in 2005. The thesis is divided into two main parts, a theoretical part and an analysis. The purpose of the theoretical part is to introduce the reader to Mika Waltari, both translators and the original book. I also briefly write about the translation theory. The analysis deals with lots of problems. One of them is the translation of the title and names. I am also interested in creativity of the translators, in the lexical richness of the adaptations and in their mistakes as well. I also show the difference in the approach of literal and free translation. Another big problem this thesis deals with is which text was the source for work of Velkoborský, because in his time there were two Finnish versions with small differences in them and also Skalička's interpretation already existed.

Mika Waltari's Detective Novels
Kopuletá, Hana ; Dlask, Jan (advisor) ; Kovář, Michal (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the analysis of three detective novels by the Finnish author Mika Waltari: Kuka murhasi rouva Skrofin? (1939, Who Murdered Mrs. Skrof?), Komisario Palmun erehdys (1940, Inspector Palmu's Mistake) and Tähdet kertovat, komisario Palmu! (1962, It is Written in the Stars, Inspector Palmu!). The first part of the thesis is devoted to the theoretical introduction, which discusses the origin and development of the detective novel and where the existing typologies of detective stories and the rules for their writing are introduced. In the second part of the thesis we will proceed to the proper analysis of Waltari's novels. We first determine to which kind of detective novel Waltari's texts belong in terms of Todorov's typology. The aim is also to determine whether his works are closer to the classic British whodunnit detective story, or its American hard-boiled variant, and to what extent Waltari follows the rules set for writing a detective novel in his texts. In the end, on the basis of performed analysis, we will describe the main tendencies in the author's detective literary output. Keywords: detective novel, Mika Waltari, police commissioner Palmu, Tzvetan Todorov, detective, murder
Portrayal of woman in selected works of K. Hotakainen, H. Raittila and J. Seppälä from the perspective of literary feminism
Turčanová, Eliška ; Dlask, Jan (advisor) ; Parente Čapková, Viola (referee)
The topic of this master's thesis is the representation of women in the selected works of Finnish male authors from the perspective of the feminist literary criticism. The thesis examines the selected prose works of Kari Hotakainen (novel Na domácí frontě, orig. title 2002), Hannu Raittila (novel Canal Grande, orig. title 2001) and Juha Seppälä (novel Švihadlo, orig. title 1990), as these three writers form an element opposite to a strong generation of Finnish female writers of the 1980s. I will analyse how these selected authors portray women in their works and how the position of female characters in comparison to male ones can be characterized. The aim is to describe the problematics regarding the portrayal of women in modern Finnish literature from the male perspective. The basis originating from the first, theoretical part, which focuses particularly on feminism and its manifestation in literary criticism, will serve as a stepping-stone for the following feminist research in the practical part of the thesis.
