The effect of contact with animals on the prevalence of allergies in children

We compared our results with findings from foreign studies. Methods: We were processing data gained from our questionnaires, which were sent into 69 primary schools in the Czech Republic. Our probands were twelve-year old children, their mothers answered. Up to 2793 question- naires were distributed; response rate was 60,8 %. Results: We were exploring a distinction in contact with different kinds of ani- mals (dogs, cats, rodents, rabbits, birds, farm animals) between allergic children and non-allergic children. We were interested in timing of the ex- posure too. There were no statistically significant differences in any case. Then we focused on the effect of contact with animals on different types of allergic diseases (bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic eczema). We detected there 3 significant results. Keeping a cat indoors at school age increased the prevalence of asthma (p < 0,05). On the other hand, indoor exposure to birds between 4 and 5 years of age had a protective...
