Controlled movement of a spherical particle in an open channel

The paper presents experimental results of the flow around the spherical particle, where the particles are placed on a thin rod and its movement is controlled by a step motor. To determine the velocity fields around the moving particle, the 2D PIV method was used. The measurement was carried out in the open channel, the bottom of which was covered with one layer of 6 mm diameter glass bars.

The vortex dynamics of the flow around an accelerating and suddenly arrested translating circular cylinder was investigated by computational fluid dynamics simulations using large eddy simulation and dynamic mesh approach. The calculations were compared with en experimental results obtained in water tank.
Vortex dynamics of a suddenly arrested cylinder

Results from an experimental study of the flow generated by a cylinder immersed in fluid, suddenly arrested or impacting normally without rebound on a solid wall, are presented. The trajectory of both the wake vortices, as well as the secondary vortices induced as the original wake convects over the arrested cylinder were investigated.
