Precipitation totals and average flows in the river Vltava during two centuries
Střeštík, Jaroslav
Precipitation series exhibit neither apparent periodicity nor systematic long-term change. Precipitation totals increase a little in summer and decrease in winter. A big noise level supplements these changes. Annual and seasonal average flows in rivers exhibit no periodicity but a weak long-term increase is observed.
Interactive demonstration of the effect of causal and acausal frequency filtering on seismic signals
Plešinger, Axel ; Kolář, Petr
Causal and acausal filtering are procedures routinely used in the processing of seismic and other non-stationary signals but many users of respective software tools are not aware of the apparently subtle, for the exact interpretation of the filtered signals however significant differences between the two methods.
Further experiences with the validity of the biometeorological prediction for the whole Czech Republic
Sitar, J. ; Střeštík, Jaroslav
The published biometeorological prediction displays an extremely low correlation with the number of patients with serious heart injury in Brno. The authors mean that this prediction should be prepared for each region separately and should not include only meteorological factors.
Reconstruction of spring air temperatures in the 18th century based on the lengths of grapewine sprouts
Střeštík, Jaroslav ; Verö, J.
Lengths of new grapewine sprouts measured in Köszeg, Hungary, since 1740, exhibit a good correlation with the average temperatures in April, even better for temperatures squared. There is also a weak correlation with the relative air humidity, and no correlation with solar activity.
Solar-geomagnetic activity and weather changes. Observation results
Bochníček, Josef ; Hejda, Pavel ; Pýcha, Josef
The impact of solar and geomagnetic activity on pressure and temperature changes in the winter lower troposphere was investigated. It was found that although correlations between solar and geomagnetic activity in individual winter periods are weak, the pressure and temperature changes show similar magnitudes.
Solar-geomagnetic activity and weather changes. The mechanisms
Pýcha, Josef ; Bochníček, Josef ; Hejda, Pavel
The mechanisms in the paper described were based on the ideas enabling to explain the observed associations between the short-term changes in solar/geomagnetic activity and short-term changes in the lower atmosphere pressure and temperature fields. Special attention was devoted to the role of planetary waves, electrostatic fields and various phases of the QBO.
Physical plausibility of "Sun-weather" research
Bochníček, Josef ; Hejda, Pavel ; Pýcha, Josef
The paper deals with the importance of three basic objections against the existence of causal link between the changes of atmospheric fields in the lower troposphere.
Main sources of solar wind high-speed streams during solar minimum
Bochníček, Josef ; Hejda, Pavel
Common analysis of solar wind (velocity, concentration, temperature) and solar soft X-ray images showed that during the solar minimum substantial majority of the solar wind high-speed streams found its source in the regions with attributes typical for coronal holes.
Magnetic susceptibility of peat-bogs as indicator of immissions in Czech and Polish parts of the Giant Mountains
Kapička, Aleš ; Strzyszcz, Z. ; Magiera, T. ; Petrovský, Eduard
Recently, rapid and inexpensive (proxy) methods of outlining areas exposed to increased pollution by atmospheric particulates of industrial origin have been developed by scientists in various fields. One of them, soil magnetometry, seems to be a suitable tool, at least in some cases. This method is based on the knowledge that ferrimagnetic particles are deposited in top soil layers.
Some possible meteorological and extra-terrestrial influences on the appearance of criminality in South-Moravian region
Střeštík, Jaroslav ; Sitar, J.
Daily rates of crimes (robberies, rapes, health injuries, suicides and murders) recorded in former South-Moravian region during 1992-1997 have been compared with meteorological data from Brno, with the geomagnetic activity and lunar phases.
