Mythological Inspiration in the poetry of Lorenzo de' Medici

The first part of this master thesis is focused on the personality of Lorenzo deʼ Medici and his inclusion in the period and cultural contexts. The literary background of Italy in the 15th century is introduced, as well as the Lorenzo's life, the summary of his literary output and his contribution as a patron of the Florentine culture and arts. The second part analyzes four of the Lorenzoʼs works related to mythological themes going back until the ancient writers. Lorenzoʼs evident influence by these authors is illustrated with the specific quotations but at the same time his own innovations in texts and stories are referred to. The conclusion compares an extend of this influence on him and the contribution of his own invention to the particular works. It points out the uniqueness of the personality of Lorenzo deʼ Medici both in the cultural and literary spheres as well.
Niccolò Machiavelli and Tommaso Campanella

The aim of this work is to analyse and to confront ideas and views of Niccolò Machiavelli and Tommaso Campanella, who are both very important Italian political philosophers. The works that will be analysed are Machiavelli's political treatise Il Principe (The Prince) and Campanella's utopian treatise La città del sole (The City of the Sun). This work is divided into four chapters. First chapter is a short introduction and is followed by the focal part of the work. In the second chapter is presented Niccolò Machiavelli's life and work as well as the analyse of his views on chosen topics, which are: ideal prince, ethics and religion. In the third chapter is presented Tommaso Campanella's life, work and also analyse of his views on chosen topics. Last chapter has concluding character, confronts Machiavelli's ideas with Campanella's and points out differences and similiarities betwen both authors.
Carlo Goldoni and Carlo Gozzi: Controversy about Theater

The subject of this thesis is the controversy about theatre between Carlo Goldoni and Carlo Gozzi. The introductory part is directed at their biography with an emphasis on the key moments of their life. The following part closely analyses their controversy with reference to their opinions which they wrote about in their polemic works. Political Motives in Dante's "Divina Commedia"

The aim of this thesis is to sumarize the elemets of Dante's political ideas, to order and to highlight them according to the evolution of Dante's political belief was evolving via the Divine Comedy where we can see the beggining of his political opinion, which is slowly taking form as he continues his work until the end when Dante forms his theory completely. Apart from the Divine Comedy which is the main book of this thesis we will also work with his important political treatise De Monarchia, where he gradually explains and defends his opinion. Whole thesis is divided into three key parts according to the evolution of Dante's political ideas; the city, the empire and the papacy. Each part includes brief political and historic context of the medieval Italy and then in each part we will focus on some of the important personalities. We will introduce them in short biographical openings and then with the help of Dante's references we described them, we determined his relation to these personalities and thus we stressed out their political profile and importance. Il Principe of Niccolo Machiavelli

The aim of this work is to present Italian writer Niccolo Machiavelli and his two works: the political treatise Il Principe (The Prince) and comedy La Mandragola (Mandragora). Introduction will describe the history of Italy in the sixteenth century, with a focus on events in the Florentine Republic, which had the influence on the life of the author. In the bibliographic section Machiavelli's personal and professional life will be chronologically portrayed as well as his literary and dramatic works. Other chapters are devoted to individual works. The first analysis deals with the political treatise of Il Principe (The Prince), political ideas that work contains and historical context in which the work was created. The second analysis, La Mandragola (Mandragora), deals with the topic and describes the nature of the political comedy. In conclusion I compare the works, find correlations and differences between public and private area and summarize the author's intention for creation of these works.
Libretti by Lorenzo Da Ponte

The theme of the bachelor thesis is Italian libretti by the poet Lorenzo da Ponte. The thesis is dealing with a bio-bibliographical aspect of the author, analyses of three opera libretti and characteristics of texts written by da Ponte with a brief comparison with the work of the Italian poet and librettist Pietro Metastasio. Italian libretti are divided into three main chapters: Le nozze di Figaro, Il dissoluto punito ossia il don Giovanni and Così fan tutte ossia la scuola degli amanti. In individual parts descriptions are divided into a separate analysis of the above mentioned opera libretti. Introduction of each chapter describes a specific work and circumstances of its creation. A more detailed analysis aims to describe prominent figures and their possible changes in the course of the plot, analyze rhythm in stanzas and identify specific phrases, metaphors and naming. Conclusion of each chapter ends with the most important findings and the potential anomalies, which were discovered during the analysis.
Pietro Aretino's Comedies

The subject of this degree paper is the comedies of Pietro Aretino. The introductory part is directed mainly at the life and work of Pietro Aretino. Following this there is an introduction to the period of the Renaissance, the comedy genre in Italy and the characteristics of individual comedies by Aretino: La Cortigiana (The Courtesan), Il Marescalco (The Stablemaster), Lo Ipocrito (The Hypocrite), La Talanta (Talanta), Il Filosofo (The Philosopher). A further part is given over to an analysis of his most famous comedy La Cortigiana (the Courtesan) and a comparison of this drama with Machiavelli's comedy La Mandragola (Mandragora).
Hyperbole, Imagination and Tradition in Luigi Pulci's Morgante

- Hyperbole, Imagination and Tradition in Luigi Pulci's Morgante The epic Morgante, compiled at the end of the 15th century by the poet Luigi Pulci, stands at the turn of two historical eras. It is a meeting point of the Middle Ages and Renaissance with their literary influences and ideas. Also, it reflects the change in the development stages of the genre: from the period when the heroic narrative was declaimed by minstrels (joglars) on squares, this subject matter was gradually introduced into royal courts, where it was influenced by a more elevated culture. The main elements of this epic include the adoption of several literary traditions, the comic in many of its forms, and religion, all of which is underlined with the special imagination of the author together with allusions to his own life situation. Luigi Pulci adopted not only the tradition of the heroic matter full of typical medieval patterns (topoi) very popular in Italy at that time, but also the comic-realistic literary tradition of Tuscany, which provides his narrative with a different tone in many ways, and thus incorporates Morgante in a literary field different from the one which its predecessors were part of. The subject of this degree paper is the comedies of Angelo Beolco. The introductory part is focused mainly at the life and work of Angelo Beolco. Following this there is an introduction to the comedy genre in 16th century in Italy and the characteristics of erudite comedy, its authors and the change from the erudite comedy to the comedy dell'arte. A further part is given over to an analysis of his comedies La Pastoral (Pastoral), Il Reduce (Returnee) - Primo dialogo: Parlamento de Ruzante che iera vegnú de campo (First dialogue: What said Ruzante when he came back from the battlefield) and Secondo dialogo: Bilora (Second dialogue: Bilora).
