Speech characteristics of Hašek's Švejk in Russian translations with a special focus on humour and satire

The diploma thesis deals with the speech characteristics of Hašek's Švejk and the translations of the novel into Russian, focusing on humour and satire. The aim of the thesis is to analyze, compare and critically evaluate the Russian translations of Jaroslav Hašek's novel The Good Soldier Švejk, and especially the canonized translation of Pyotr Bogatyryov witha Czech original novel focusing on humor and satire. Apart from Bogatyryov's translation, the thesis focuses on the translations of Mikhail Skachkov as well as the latest translation of V. Lavrova and A. Fyodorov. The theoretical part is dedicated to the biographies of the translators, Hašek's writing style and the speech characteristics of thenovel's main character. In the practical part, the thesis focuses on theanalysis of the translations of the excerpts containing humoristic elements. Based on the results of the analysis, in the conclusion part of the thesis we described translation tendencies of individual translators. This commentary includes a translation analysis of the source text, a description of the translation process, a selection of a translation method, a categorization of translation shifts and last but not least, it covers strategy of solutions to various translation challenges.

Russian Translations of Karel Čapek's novel War with the Newts

The present Master's thesis handles the reception of the works of Karel Čapek in the Soviet Union and Russian Federation from the 1920s to present day. The focus of the thesis involves two existing Russian translations of Karel Čapek's fantastic novel War with the Newts, published nearly 80 years apart. The paper attempts to demonstrate how Čapek's works were received by the Russian speaking community and in what context they were understood. It shows a picture of the author created by Soviet and Russian journalism and commentaries accompanying his works published in the Russian language. Through the analysis of these texts the thesis demonstrates the influence of ideology on the interpretation of the author's literary work in general, and the novel in particular, and also on the interpretation of his political involvement and his life. Further focus is given to the translation of Czech cultural facts in a selected representative sample of the novel War with the Newts and a comparative analysis of both Russian translations of the sample are made. Natalya Gorbanevskayaʼs reception and translation in the Czech Republic

The present diploma thesis investigates Czec sociopolitical and translation reception of poet, journalist and dissident Natalya Gorbanevskaya. The thesis bases on the context from the Moscow Red Square demonstration against the occupation of Czechoslovakia in August 1968 and maps its reception, which is above all in the Czech Republic an inseparable part of the image of this personage. Further, it introduces the life, literary output and poetics of Gorbanevskaya and makes translatological analysis of Czech translations of authorial parts from her book Red Square at Noon, cycle of eight-line-poems "Place de la non-Concorde" (Площадь несогласия) and other particular poems. Inseparable part of the thesis is also an interview with the author of Czech translations Milan Dvořák.

Jaromír Nohavica as a Translator

The diploma thesis focuses on the translation of Jaromir Nohavica's work. The aim of the thesis is to define Nohavica's translation style on the basis of detailed translatological analysis of his translations of Bulat Okudzhava and Vladimir Vysotsky. At the same time, the translations of Milan Dvorak and Petr Kovarik are analysed. The analysis is extended by a brief analysis of a song score which works as a verification of a hypothesis whether the chosen translations are songful not only in Jaromir Nohavica's presentation. The theoretical part of the thesis is dedicated to Jaromir Nohavica's personality, particularities of lyrics translation, author song and their authors. Thanks to a complex approach, the diploma thesis describes a translation style of a significant representative of Czech culture which has not been so far individually introduced. Developmental Trends in Czech Translation Criticism with a Special Focus on Professional and Lay Reception of Libor Dvořákʼs Translations from Russian

This diploma thesis tracks the Developmental Trends in Czech Translation Criticism with a Special Focus on Professional and Lay Reception of Libor Dvořák's Translations from Russian. It lists critical receptions of Dvořák's translations in the chronological order and analyzes to what extent their form and content comply with critics' prescriptive requirements who had previously reviewed the quality of literary translation. Further, it introduces Libor Dvořák as a journalist and translator and outlines his critics' professional profiles. The thesis also examines the translator's motivation to create new translations of significant works by Russian classics, such as War and Peace, The Master and Margarita and The Brothers Karamazov. The conclusion presents the results of the analytical part of the thesis and provides the translator's own reaction. Analysis of Criminal Terminology in the Czech Translations of Selected Dostoyevsky's Novels

(in English): This thesis focuses on a review of the criminal terminology in the Czech translations of five novels by F. M. Dostoevsky. The paper covers the following novels: 1) Crime and Punishment; 2) Demons; 3) Notes from the House of the Dead; 4) The Brothers Karamazov and 5) The Idiot. The main objective of the manuscript is to analyze the legal terms in these novels and to ensure accurate translations into the Czech language from a legal and linguistic perspective. Translating Children's Literature: Literary Works of K. I. Chukovsky in Selected Czech Translations

(in English): The diploma thesis focuses on translating children's literature: literary works of K. I. Chukovsky in selected Czech translations and its specifics. Amongst these specifics we can mention the dual address, censoring during Soviet Union, adaptations, the questions of illustrations in translating children's literature and utmost importance of phonetic and rhythmic structures in Chukovsky's literary works. Last two specifics must be in harmony with text itself due to the reader's age category (preschool and school-age children). Specifics of children's literature as well as theory and strategies in translating children's literature are applied on selected Czech translations. The translation analysis will be carried out on following works: Телефон and Муха-Цокотуха. The analytic part of given diploma thesis focuses to what extent the translators took into consideration stated specifics. Both analyzed works has been selected thanks to their most characteristic elements on which we can demonstrate the author's style and then compare them with translations.
