Use of discrete simulation tools for digital twin creation

Digital Twins have undergone significant development since their introduction in 2002. Gradual expansion of capabilities and functions has secured them an indispensable place within today’s manufacturing systems. This work focuses on describing digital twins, as well as levels of enterprise automation. It provides a closer look at the manufacturing execution system as it is directly influenced by digital twins within a manufacturing company. In addition to introducing digital twin technology and related Industry 4.0 technologies, this thesis delves into creating a digital twin for a selected manufacturing system and further explores its capabilities. The practical part of the thesis includes a demonstration of simulation tools for digital twins in the context of optimizing manufacturing processes. Proposed optimizations are then simulated and compared with the initial solution.

At this time it is necessary to use design tools and virtual model validation to plan the adaptation of algorithms to reduce costs and increase the efficiency of production systems. Using software tools it is possible to obtain and after that analyze data from the simulation environment. Using models and 3D space, it is also possible to analyze ranges of manipulators and collision areas. It is also possible to test robotic programs and find out the energy consumption, and possible cooperation of more robotic manipulators. This article discusses the use of ABB RobotStudio simulation tool for testing optimization algorithms and thus optimizing energy consumption. The article describes the measurement chain and contains measurement in simulation followed by the analysis of measured data.
