In this thesis we focused on the detection of diseases that affect the structure of the vocal tract, and in particular those that alter the characteristics of the vocal folds. An overview of current techniques is provided. We also state the source of recordings of pathological and normal speakers. The ultimate objective of the computational approach described in this thesis is to estimate the parameters of the glottal source model that would in turn enable the detection and classification of the glottis pathologies. Specifically, we describe an analysis of acoustic emissions that can be derived using a parametric model of the vocal cords.
