Econometric analysis of the prices of mobile phones
Nešpor, Radim ; Formánek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Polonyankina, Tatiana (referee)
The work deals with the econometric analysis of the prices of mobile phones based on the selected parameters. The aim of this thesis is to determine, which of the selected parameters affect the price of a new mobile phone and how they affects the price. The theoretical part deals at first with the regression model and determining statistically significant variables and significance of the model as a whole. Then I introduce different procedures for finding and selecting the best estimate for the model. In this thesis I will focus on three procedures for the selection of explanatory variables: best subset selection, forward stepwise selection and backward stepwise selection. Finally I mention the detection of multicollinearity and heteroscedasticity testing. In the second part, I apply different procedures for the selection of explanatory variables and afterwards, based on the criteria defined in the first part, I will select the best model. Finally, I compare these models and choose the best one.
How to detect favoritism at dance competitions
Silvarová, Lenka ; Svoboda, Miroslav (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
The thesis deals with the motivation of jurors privileging some of the participants in dance competitions. It gives an overview of the dance sport and its rules, analyzes the factors that have an impact on privileging. Based on regression analysis it determines particular jurors who are not able to dismiss a connection to specific couples. Supporting analysis determines twenty-seven jurors who have different views, or prefer some couples and therefore can be suspected of favouritism. The thesis reveals that jurors, who are from the same club as couples, have a tendency to evaluate better and deviate from the average of the jurors by 0.3 to 0.4 point. It shows the significance of the "average marks of all jurors -- 2.5" and "lap of contest" variables.
Education of the population as a factor of regional development in the Czech Republic
Cimpová, Jana ; Kouřilová, Jana (advisor) ; Tomešová, Jana (referee)
The master thesis concentrates on the problematics of the regional development in connection with the educational structure of the Czech Republic. The main goal of this working paper is to evaluate, whether the level of the education reached has an impact on the regional development. For purpose of the analysis, NUTS 3 regions of the Czech Republic have been used. The regional development has been defined with five economic indicators, namely GDP per capita, average monthly gross salary, long term unemployment, foreign direct investments and employment in the primary sector. Nowadays education on the university degree is gaining importance and that is why university degree of the working population has been set as independent variable. For the proof of the dependence between university degree and dependent economic indicators of regional development, linear regression analysis has been used. In order to analyze the development of the dependence in time, for each economic indicators regression analysis of two years has been compared.
Estimation of the passive and active waste in public procurement in the Slovak Republic
Bachan, Milan ; Pavel, Jan (advisor) ; Zídková, Hana (referee)
The main object of this thesis is to estimate the waste in public procurement in Slovakia and estimate its active and passive components. The first part offers a theoretical explanation of legislation related to public procurement, as well as a theoretical explanation of active and passive waste. In the next section there is a brief description of similar study, which estimated the waste of public procurement in Italy. In the second part, which is empirical, there is a analysis of the results of public contracts related to construction work. Data were obtained from the electronic database of Public Procurement Office in Slovakia. From these data I created a regression model obtained by the method of least squares. The aim was to determine the truth of the hypothesis that if the contracts awarded through the procurement of external agencies, the procurement process becomes more efficient. The analysis did not confirm the truth of this hypothesis and thus I could not estimate the amount of passive and active waste. The results obtained from regression analysis were then used to estimate the amount of waste in the case of public procurement related to construction of residential buildings, reconstruction of schools and the revitalization of public spaces, when the public purchaser was the city or village. This analysis also estimates the percentage of the waste of public procurement, when process of public procurement was supervised by external procurement agencies.
Analýza faktorů ovlivňující strategie a očekávání českých začínajících firem
Šála, Miroslav ; Lukeš, Martin (advisor) ; Jaklová, Martina L. (referee)
This thesis goal is to analyze the factors that are influencing the strategies and growth expectations of the Czech start-ups. The analysis is based on the data sample from the Czech GEM 2011 and unique study of the Czech start-ups performed in 2011 as well. Various statistical methods are used to determine which microeconomic factors affect (1) the strategy choice and (2) growth expectations. As for the factors influencing expected growth, the research is concluded by the creation of the regression equations explaining the expected growth in the revenues as well as expected growth in employees. The factors influencing strategy choice are: managers-owners experience, the environment, self-efficacy, gender, and innovativeness. The factors influencing expected growth in revenues are: innovativeness, self-efficacy, competitive strategy, managers-owners experience, social capital, export intention, and business planning. The factors influencing the expected growth in employment are: legal structure of company, export intention, self-efficacy, innovativeness, competitive strategy, business planning. Following variables create the regression equation explaining expected growth in revenues: financial planning, export intention, education, IPR use, and age of entrepreneur. The variables explaining expected growth in employees are: (1) export intention, product newness, and legal structure of the company, (2) product newness, differentiation inclination, and financial projections. Alongside, the Porter's generic strategies framework was proved to fit the data sample while it was showed that a portion of Czech entrepreneurs are "stuck in the middle". By these findings, this thesis provides unique empirical verification of the growth and strategy theory on the sample of the Czech entrepreneurs.
The Importance of Credit Rating and Credit Rating Agencies on the Stability of International Financial Markets
Búry, Jan ; Kalínská, Emílie (advisor) ; Čajka, Radek (referee)
Credit rating agencies judge the creditworthiness of the debtors and debt obligations and the relative probability of their default. Credit rating plays a very important role in the financial markets. It influences the behavior of all participants (investors, debtors and regulators) of the market transactions. The first part of the thesis deals with definition and function of the credit rating. The main controversial points in the activity of the credit rating agencies will be discussed, as well as how the industry is regulated. In the second part it is claimed that the opinions of the credit rating agencies on sovereign bonds (sovereign rating) contribute to the overheating of the economies or to the deeper recession due to procyclicity of the rating. The actual credit rating of the country will be compared with a rating based on a theoretical model designed with publicly available economic data.
Částečné zapomínání při odhadu regresních modelů
Nagy, Ivan ; Pavelková, Lenka ; Dedecius, K.
The report deals with forgetting of parameter estimates during estimation of slowly varying parameters. It derives algorithm, which is able to forget those parameters that vary and not to forget those who stay constant.
Postmerger Financial Performance: Econometric Analysis
Volgina, Vera ; Hnilica, Jiří (advisor) ; Sieber, Patrik (referee)
There are numerous researches done in the last couple decades dedicated to the observation of impact of merges and acquisitions on the performance of the company. The topic is considered to be up-to-date, as still there is no common approach to evaluating of benefits mergers are about to bring to a new established entity. In this thesis the issue of post-merger financial performance is investigated on an example of three biggest energy companies in Europe: RWE, E.ON and Vattenfall. The aim of the thesis is to find out whether financial performance of chosen companies improves after the merger occurs. This target is elaborated with a help of the analysis of commonly used financial ratios in corporate finance and construction of two regression models, which explain the interrelations between basic indicator of the company's growth (net income), the fact of the merger and determined financial ratios. As an outcome of the research, a few findings were obtained, such as worsening of financial performance three to five years after the merger, with continuing improvement in further years, quite stable financial indicators before the merger, positive interconnection between the fact of the merger and the net income. Such outcomes might be considered as significant, though further research and elaboration of the topic can be performed in the future.
