Economic development of the Canadian Arctic and the impact of mining on Inuit
Švecová, Marianna ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (advisor) ; Šír, Jan (referee)
The bachelor thesis analyses and compares three main periods of the economic development in the Canadian Arctic, starting from the years 1950's until the end of the administrative of Prime Minister Harper in 2015. Mining of natural resources, as the base of the North's development, has been seen by the federal government also as a tool for cultural assimilation of Inuit into the dominant society. Nevertheless, participation of Inuit in mining activities and in fact in the whole employment culture has had serious impact on Aboriginal communities who have never been consulted about the federal strategy. However, while the first phase of development is characterized by strict colonialist approach of the government, the situation started to change during the second phase, characterized by a rising of Inuit's political participation and their first demonstrations of discontent. Although during the third, neoliberal era, several new mechanisms in order to improve the dialogue between Inuit, mining companies and the government were accepted, social conditions in Inuit communities remain below the Canadian average and with the government "laissez-faire" attitude they are not to be changed any time soon.
Development Assistance in Post-conflict Reconstruction in Africa: Case Study of Rwanda and Burundi
Bártová, Jana ; Sejkora, Jiří (advisor) ; Havlová, Radka (referee)
The thesis deals with development cooperation in post-conflict reconstruction. The comparative case study analyzes the specific involvement of the international community in the post-war reconstruction of Rwanda and Burundi with emphasis on two main areas, political/constitutional, and socio-economic. Based on the findings of the analysis, possible measures are suggested to make development cooperation in post-conflict reconstruction more effective, especially in the case of Burundi. The results of the analysis show that the international community should in case of these two countries, among other things, mostly focus on securing political stability, supporting civil society, or building infrastructure, and thus help to achieve the goals of post-conflict reconstruction.
Economic development of South Asian countries
Chyšková, Kateřina ; Soukup, Jindřich (advisor) ; Makovský, Petr (referee)
Aim of this thesis is to empirically verify the validity of Rostows Stages of economic growth model and Solow-Swan model of economic growth realized by using statistical data South Asian countries reported. Theoretical part is devoted to characteristics of the growth models, explaining the assumptions theories work with and defining their origins and possible limitations. Practical part is focused on the analysis of statistical outputs newly industrialized Asian countries (Asian Tigers). The choice of selected data for analysis is justified. The data are further evaluated against expectations out of the Rostows and Solows theory of economic growth. The appropriateness of the growth models with regard to the territories is also evaluated.
